Morocco blast six past hapless Gabon in friendly

RABAT, Nov 16 (Reuters) - Morocco recorded their biggest win in more than a decade with a 6-0 thumping of Gabon in a friendly international on Wednesday. The home side went on a scoring spree in the second half after Bouchaib El Moubarki had given them a one goal lead at the interval in Rabat. The remaining five goals came in the last 25 minutes against a Gabon side devoid of most of their Europe-based professionals. Substitute Jawad Ouaddouch scored a debut goal in the 65th minute, followed three minutes later by Nourdine Boukhari's effort. El Moubarki added the fourth in the 71st minute, defender Hicham Mahdoufi out-sprinted the visiting defence for the fifth two minutes later and Hassan Souari completed the rout with a goal in stoppage time. Morocco scored seven goals without reply in beating Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of Congo, in a friendly in Settat in August, 1996. It was the second successive heavy defeat for Gabon's new coach Alain Giresse, who saw his side beaten 5-0 by the Ivory Coast in an African Nations Cup qualifier in Abidjan last month.

Rennes striker Youssef Hadji will move back to his original club, AS Nancy, on a 3 and a half year deal, after a subpar first half of the season with Rennes this seasons. Hadji made 13 appearances, 8 as a starter, but failed to find the back of the net. Nancy are 7th in the French top division.

Boussoufa voted best in Belgium

Morocco's Mbark Boussoufa of Anderlecht won Belgium's player of the year award on Wednesday.

He finished ahead of his team-mates Mohammed Tchite of Congo and Nicolas Frutos of Argentina.

Argentine Lucas Biglia, who joined Anderlecht for the new season in August, gave the Brussels club a sweep of the top four finishers.

In a poll of journalists, coaches and former players, 22-year-old playmaker Boussoufa totaled 283 points, 82 ahead of striker Tchite.

Frutos, a forward who was often injured during the year, received 111 points in the vote and Biglia finished with 74.

Boussoufa won most of his points in the first half of the year, when he was still playing for Ghent.

"The main thing I want to do now is lead Anderlecht to the title," he said.

Last year's winner Sergio Conceicao of Standard did not finish in the top 10.

Moroccan-born Afellay goes Dutch

Ibrahim Afellay has decided to play for the Netherlands instead of Morocco at international level.

The 20-year-old PSV Eindhoven midfielder had deliberated for months over which team to represent and paid 'deep respect' to Morocco for its invitation.

"It was very flattering," Afellay said in a statement on Friday.

"Nevertheless, I consider the choice to play for the Netherlands in the future to be the right one.

"Playing for the Netherlands or Morocco would be an honour for me (but) playing for the Dutch team will also be good for my development as a player at PSV."

Holland coach Marco van Basten welcomed the decision taken by Afellay, whose parents are Moroccan.

"While he was born and raised in the Netherlands, I know that in his heart he has close links to Morocco and the Moroccan community," Van Basten said.

"I'm pleased Ibrahim has said he wants to play for the Netherlands in the future.

"He's a good footballer with many qualities who, if he continues to develop the way he is at PSV at the moment, will probably play an important role for the Netherlands in the coming years."

Afellay has injured his groin so will miss Holland's friendly against Russia in Amsterdam on 7 February.

Morocco's Zairi moves to Nantes

Morocco forward Jaouad Zairi has joined struggling French club Nantes on loan from Boavista of Portugal until the end of the season.

Nantes announced on its Web site Tuesday that the 24-year-old has successfully passed a medical and that the club had an option to buy him after the loan period.

Zairi has scored six goals in 27 games for Morocco, but failed to impress at Portuguese club Boavista, where he played six games as substitute.

Nantes is in 18th place in the 20-team French league, making it one of three teams in the relegation zone.

PSV midfielder Ibrahim Affelay made his international debut this past week ... for the Netherlands. This rules him out for featuring for Morocco in the future.

(www.AtlasLions.eu) Olympic international and FAR Rabat central defender Youssef Rabeh told Moroccan media that he is eyed by PSG and AS Monaco.

Rabeh will be 22 next week told daily Assabah that he has been watched closely by scouts of PSG and AS Monaco since the World Youth Championship 2005 that was held in Holland.

Rabeh is willing to go on trials with these clubs after this season in the hope to seal a contract.

Rabeh confirmed that he is not thinking to play again for any club in the Gulf as he had a bad experience with Saudi Al-Ahly. Rabeh had to terminate his contract with Al-Ahly due injury.

RAJA striker Mouhssine Iajour went on trial with Ligue 2 side RC Strasbourg. He impressed the reserve coaches but did not get a chance to train with the first team because of a mix-up. He might be brought in for next year. The 21-year old made headlines when he was top scorer at the 2005 U20 African Cup in Benin and at the 2005 U20 World Cup in Holland.

Morocco pick Frenchman Michel as coach says official
Reuters in Rabat
15.08.2007

Morocco have sacked coach M'Hamed Fakhir and selected Frenchman Henri Michel in his place, a top Moroccan soccer official said on Wednesday.

"We can say that Henri Michel has become the new national team coach," Abdelhamid Essaouiri of the Moroccan Royal Football Federation said.

"We will sign the accord with him tomorrow after working out a few details which are left to agree upon," he told Reuters.

Michel, who was coaching Egyptian club Zamalek until he stepped down recently, arrived in Morocco on Wednesday to hold talks with the federation.

The much-travelled 59-year-old, who was in charge of Ivory Coast at the 2006 World Cup, had a previous spell as Morocco coach, steering them to the 1998 World Cup in France.

The federation gave no explanation for sacking Fakhir but local media had been speculating he would be fired as soon as a suitable replacement was found, citing his lacklustre performance since he was appointed late last year.

We have a couple of talented fellas in the Norwegian leauge, who are of Moroccan heritage Tarik Elyounoussi and Mohammed Fellah, but both have chosen to represent Norway at International level. They are both from Al-Hoceima, and around 20 years of age.

I think Elyounoussi was wanted by West Ham, too bad that they both decided to play for Norway instead. I don't think they'll get much chance to establish themselves at international level for Norway. Hopefully they'll not end up like El Fakiri.

Michel heads home with Morocco
Friday 16 November 2007
by Christian Chβtelet from Paris
in uefa.com

Henri Michel feels his skills are not "acknowledged in my home country" as he prepares to lead Morocco against France, the land of his birth, tonight.

Difficult relationship
Now 60, Michel has a difficult relationship with his homeland. As France coach between 1984 and 1988, many still feel that - regardless of the successes of later sides - the Aix-en-Provence-born coach had the best squad of players that the national team ever had with the likes of Michel Platini, Patrick Battiston, Manuel Amoros, Jean Tigana and Alain Giresse.

'Not bitter'
Michel took his side to the last four of the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, losing out to West Germany in controversial style, but he received less sympathy after his side failed to qualify for the 1988 UEFA European Championship - a tournament they had won under his predecessor Michel Hidalgo on home soil in 1984. "I'm not ackowledged in my country but I can live with that," he said this week. "But my career abroad shows my ability. I'm not bitter about that."

Special occasion
A midfielder at FC Nantes Atlantique for the whole of his playing career, Michel scored five goals in 58 appearances for Les Bleus, and is looking forward to facing his old side with Morocco. "The game will be a special one," he said. "Special for Morocco which has links with France, special for the players as [eight] of them play in France and special for me as I was the coach of France."

Useful practice
Appointed as Morocco coach for a second time at the start of 2007, Michel hopes the friendly in Paris will be useful for all concerned. "We are preparing for the African Cup of Nations [in Ghana in early 2008] while France are preparing for their trip to Ukraine. I hope it will be a nice game." He also hoped France would reach UEFA EURO 2008™, saying: "Sure, they are strong enough to advance."

Milutinović record
After the African Cup of Nations, Michel may well be looking toward the 2010 World Cup, and the chance of matching Bora Milutinović's record of having led five different nations to World Cup finals. Thus far, Michel coached France in 1986, Cameroon in 1994, Morocco in 1998 and Ivory Coast in 2006.

"The greatest glory in living lies not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall.”
