Pfister quits as Togo coach

Togo coach Pfister quits over pay

Pfister only took charge of the team earlier this year
Togo's World Cup Group G preparations are in turmoil after coach Otto Pfister resigned over a pay dispute.

His former assistant Kodjovi Mawuena will take charge of the side for their first game with South Korea on 13 June.

"When I started to be manager of Togo, I was promised that bonuses for the players would be cleared," Pfister told Fifaworldcup.com.

"That is still not the case, so I decided to quit immediately. It has destroyed a dream of my life."

Pfister, who was only appointed in March, said he blamed the Togolese Football Association for the row and he was not interested in further talks.

"I'm not going back and I am giving up my work as national trainer. I won't be messed with any more," said Pfister.

"The players boycotted training sessions and with that my basis to work has been removed."

Fifa's head of communications Markus Ziegler said they had not yet had confirmation that Pfister was no longer in charge, but changing the coach was unlikely to be a problem.

"The situation for players is clear, but the rules do not apply to coaches," he said.

An earthquake shook our preparations

Team manager Gerson Kwadjo Dobou
World Cup debutants Togo are in the same group as South Korea, Switzerland and France.

They are the lowest Fifa-ranked team in the tournament and only appointed Pfister as coach in March.

The Togolese Prime Minister Edem Kodjo had said he would travel to Germany to personally intervene in the row.

Team manager Gerson Kwadjo Dobou said Pfister could return if he wanted to.

"Last night, an earthquake shook our preparations. Therefore everything is in a bit of chaos now," said Dobou .

"It is a shame that we are talking about money, not football."

He hardly had any choice really. If the FA doesn't keep their promises and the players start boycotting trainings...

Big games are easy than the other games, unfortunately. Every times we have the control the games, under the control the games, during the games we had the some possibilities, some big chances, some big okazyons, something like that but what can I do, sometimes? And….it’s the football, that’s the football, something happened. Everything is something happened. - Fatih Terim

Pfister is a mercenary.

Anyone working for African teams/clubs should know this is normal and should expect things like this.

The players will be back. Many African teams before the ACN complain, boycott training, and then return whether their problems are resolved or not.

But he's adding more problems to the Togolese FA, to CAF, and to Africa by quitting. There is already one problem with the players to handle, don't add another one especially when he knows this is a common problem.

I dunno, if I was about to coach or play for the first and probably last time in a WC, I would not care so much about money...

On the other hand, the FA should do everything to prepare the team properly.

hear hear

I think this is a very unwise choice, but hey, I showed my dissaproval of the sacking of Keshi before on this board. The Togolese fully deserve to be sent home with 0 points. If they were not African, I would definitely hope so, but for the sake of African football I hope it will not happen. But the Togolese FA is plain sad. Complete mismanagement ever since the ANC. The sacking of Keshi was pathetic, replacing him with a mercenary European was even sadder.
