they were founding members of CAF and won African Cup of Nations before

but they declined

...

any European-based players in their squad?

nope...at one point in time sudan used to have one of the best african teams alongside egypt in the seventies but the civil war completely ruined the sudanese football structure...

as far as i know there are no sudanese playing in europe..although there was one sudanese player who had a trial in a serie A team back in 97 can't remember his name though....and if u're interested also there were reports of paul jewel *wigan chairman* going to sudan and scope out the situation i think they're trying to get a "feeder club" type deal with premier sudanese clubs according to sudanese press...we all hope that goes well...

as for ethiopia...they have no people that play in europe except for youssouf hersi and he plays in heerenveen i think
