Africa's Best (2005) - Didier Drogba

Hopefully, the first of many for the Ivorian. Never heard of this award: Golden Lion prize, which is voted by African sports journalists and conducted by this Moroccan newspaper. (Any Moroccans in the house verify the credibility of this newspaper? I will assume it's like France Football award for the Euros.

I see it as African journos voting for the player who performed well on African soil. No doubt, Eto'o would have won it if Cam made it to the WC.

Congratulations Didier.

Tight voting outcome:
Drogba - 146 points
Eto'o - 144
Essien - 54

Here's the article from BBC:

Quote:
Ivory Coast's Didier Drogba has narrowly beaten Cameroonian Samuel Eto'o to the 2005 Golden Lion prize for the best African footballer.

The Golden Lion prize is a poll which has become a traditional indicator of the destiny of the African Footballer of the Year award.

Drogba finished just two points ahead of Eto'o in the vote conducted by the Moroccan sports newspaper Al Mountakhab.

The results of the poll usually provides a strong indication of the outcome of the more prestigious Caf African Footballer of the Year award.

The Ivory Coast international, whose side qualified for the World Cup finals in Germany in dramatic fashion last October, finished with 146 points to Eto'o's 144 in the poll of sports journalists from across the African continent.

Ghana's Michael Essien was a distant third with 54 points.

African journos are mental, Eto'o pisses on Drogba from a skyscraper.

That award was bought. There is no way that Drogba has had anywhere neat that season that Eto'o has, he is not even half the player than Eto'o

Just look at Eto'o' goals to game ratio, it speaks wonders in La Liga.

Well Drogba was easily his country's most decisive player in the lead up to their first ever World Cup appearance, on the expense of Cameroon that is...

That has got to count for something, no ?

I'd rather see my country make the World Cup than my club winning the league. Eto'o being the better player is something else, but Drogba's achievement was bigger no doubt even if he scored less goals.

drogba is shite.
A striker who cant score 2+ goals all season.
Eto is more prolific, and has more assists.
who the heck is drogba?

Gentlemen,
Drogba outperformed Eto'o on African soil, which is what I think the respondents based their analysis on. Eto'o far outshines DD in Europe, but Drogba can be attributed to taking CIV to it's first WC.

That sorta analysis would be flawed though because Essien did not really lead Ghana to the WC whereas Adebayor led Togo (as well as being top scorer in the WC Qualifiers).

Honestly, I dunno what these guys based it on. If it was primarily performance in Africa, then DD hands down, but then Essien should cede to Adebayor.

ridiculous, they judge on a few WC qualifying games rather than a whole season ?
