Future of XT
Dear Xtratime Community Members and Visitors,
During the last several years, we have all perceived the decrease in the activity of the forum, a sharp decline in the quality of the posts, and a general lack of civility in many discussions. While the causes of these trends are manifold and in some cases involve issues far beyond Xtratime, we believe that it is not a coincidence that these trends have gone hand-in-hand with an increase of political discussions in the forum, and rampant, aggressive trolling. While these developments are part of broader tendencies in internet culture too, we strongly believe that Xtratime should be first and foremost a community to discuss football.
We are advocates of a lightly moderated forum in which members behave respectfully toward one another and enforce the rules on their own. Unfortunately, political discussion seems increasingly at odds with a functioning, peaceful football forum. We have therefore decided to restrict all political discussion on Xtratime. We are aware that some of you will find this problematic and we acknowledge that it is a risky move in a forum with an already declining activity, but we hope you will understand our reasons. We also hope this will be the first step towards an improved global community dedicated to enjoyable discussions about football.
We will create a sub-forum under Lounge for all political discussions. Any thread that has the sole purpose of discussing politics must be created there. Threads of that nature anywhere else will be moved/closed without further discussion. Occasional posts that mention matters related to politics in threads about others topic may be tolerated, but if they derail the threads or we notice specific members constantly bringing politics into unrelated topics, actions may be taken.
Active topics will be moved there, but no threads obviously aimed to mock positions acceptable in free and democratic societies will be allowed. Disparaging expressions will not be tolerated. We will not allow threads to become circles of accusations, personal attacks, or platforms for political agendas. Spamming will not be tolerated. "Copy and Paste" posts may be acceptable only when directly relevant and with moderation. The repetition of slogans and other expressions from political propaganda will be banned. We encourage members to critically develop and discuss ideas. Xtratime is not meant to be used for propaganda.
Above all, Xtratime is a community where people from all cultures, political, and personal persuasions are welcome to discuss football. The predominance of aggressive political discourses in recent years has gravely affected the possibility to do so. Members should participate from the forum with that principle in mind. We strongly discourage members from engaging exclusively in political discussions, and urge them to post regularly in football topics.
With best regards,
The Xtratime Management Team
That's quite the convenient take on things. It's almost as if the author inserted his own political bias into the mix when trying to explain the downfall of XT.
The analysis somehow fails to take into consideration the fact that insults and personal attacks used to be way more prevalent and vicious in the past. It also manages to completely avoid mentioning the fact that the number of new members joining is basically zero. And no, it's not because XT has turned into Stormfront and that good natured people simply turn away immediately at the sight of the horrendousness. It's because people can't even find the forum. This place isn't exactly search engine optimized. A person looking for a football forum would sooner find the Brentford FC forum than this place.
Oh, and do I really have to mention the password debacle? That was basically the final nail in the coffin. About half of the few remaining posters never bothered to sign up again after that **** up.
no threads obviously aimed to mock positions acceptable in free and democratic societies will be allowed
The sentence above is just plain weird. The mocking of ideas is not allowed in the XT version of a free and democratic society? That sounds like the opposite of a free society, the mocking of ideas is pretty essential for the health of a democratic society IMHO. But what do I know, I'm just a simple hateful extremist trying to get by...
And of course I have to object to the phrasing below. That's a statement that I cannot possibly bring myself to support. If I can't hate on minorities, women, , libertarians, environmentalists and the gays I don't want to be part of this community anymore.
