Semi Final Fixture 2: Paraguay x Venezuela (July 20, 2011)

Another shocking fixture in Mendoza. This time Paraguay qualified by stunning Brazil, after a scoreless match 2-0 in penalties, Brazil missing 4 of their penalties. Paraguay have yet to win a match in this tournament, but have made it to the semis. Venezuela complete the final four after knocking out favorites Chile, 2-1. The teams played against each other in the group stages of group B, in a thrilling 3-3 draw, in which Venezuela came back from being 3-1 down to 3-3 in the final 4 minutes. Rincon will miss the game for Venezuela, while Alcaraz for Paraguay, both due to red cards. Paraguay are favorites after a superb performance from Villar, and with talent such as Valdez. However, Venzuela qualified from a group containing Brazil, Ecuador and Paraguay, and stunned Chile, so don't rule them out.

What terrible semifinal matches.

I Haven't been watching so perhaps some of these teams have deserved their place and are playing great football. Is that the case?

You can say some of them did.

Uruguay were great against Argentina, playing with a man down but still showing great strength and heart. Muslera produced stunning saves, and Forlan was superb. However, they relied on set pieces and defender for most of the match.

Peru played a great game against Columbia, but had some luck on their side. Falcao missed a penalty and their 2 goals were pretty much gifts from the Columbian goalkeeper.

Paraguay parked the bus to overcome Brazil, and as mentioned, they haven't won a match since the start of the tournament. However their goalie Villar was the main reason why Brazil are out.

Venezuela took their chances, and had some luck too against Chile, who hit the cross bar and had a goal disallowed.

I think Paraguay will squeeze through in a 2-1 victory. Should be the better game to watch of the two semifinals, though.

Venezuela gave the Mexican NT hell at Mexico, in a friendly that felt more like a tournament match (ended 1-1 I believe). It's hard to underestimate them. When they are hungry they can be dangerous. I don't know. This is hard to call. Common sense says Paraguay, but I'm going to go with Venezuela 2-1.

Not only that, but how did Venezuela even get to the semis??? They actually defeated Chile 2-1 but were ranked at the bottom of pot 3 coming into the tournament!! That means they were the second worst South American team coming into the Copa. Just a

Fun Fact. This will be the second game outside of the group stages Paraguay faced a team from their group!

Yup, I hope so to. That semifinal last night is the definition of the whole entire Copa America this year. BORING! But I think that the third-place game and final will be of much better quality.

I've watched a lot of matches this Copa America and I'm rooting for Venezuela the rest of the way.

They are team with no primadonnas or overrated 40m Euro 'superstars' to depend on, and instead and got to their first semi-final in history the old fashioned way - with pure grit and hard work

Aquilani

This Venezuelan keeper needs to take more time. He's trying to launch the ball too quickly. Some of his sweeps are heading toward the wrong people. Needs to anticipate better.
