Semi Final Fixture 1: Peru x Uruguay (July 19, 2011)

Yes, the title says Peru x Uruguay, not a semi final many anticipated. La Plata will host the first Semi Final between Peru who shockingly qualified by beating Columbia 2-0 AET, and new favorites Uruguay who knocked out hosts Argentina in the 1-1 draw, winning 5-4 after penalties. The two teams played against each other in group C during the group stages, in a match which ended 1-1. Uruguay will be missing Perez due to suspension. Peru will go as the underdogs, but as we saw, anything is expected in this Copa.

The first game between these two was a tight affair that could have gone either way. Peru scoring on an ambitious ball over the top by one of their defenders and Uruguay snatching one right at the end of the opening half. Tough to say which way it will go but Uruguay are the obvious favorites with machines like Arevalo and Lugano at the back as well as Forlan, Suarez, and maybe Cavani as well up top. Peru, though, have a defence that can frustrate many teams which they proved against Colombia and almost did against Chile. It should be a tight affair, one goal could decide it. My prediction will have to be a 1-0 Uruguay win, Diego Forlan with the goal.

I think now that Uruguay see themselves as tournament favorites, they will grasp at the chance. Uruguay wakes up, wins 3-0.

Is it true that if you don't use it, you lose it?

I would be surprised at a one-sided scoreline. The horrible pitch in La Plata is a bit of an equalizer.

I see Uruguay winning, 2-0. Forlan and Suarez put one in each ina game completely dominated by the Uruguayans.

I'm unfamiliar with Peru, all I've heard is not to estimate them as they fight till the death.

I don't know man, lets put an end to this cinderella story and get serious, Uruguay 2-0. Suarez to get both goals.

I don´t think the 'favouritism' is good news for Uruguay...in this tournament.

Just realized, do you think if Peru had Farfan, Pizarro, and Merino, would they have performed BETTER in COPA or WORSE??

Sometimes when some of your main guns are absent, it puts a large amount of pressure and motivation on the more weaker players to step it up and play better. At the same time not only is there more responsibility on their backs, but the process can be rewarding at the same time given if they perform well, some good clubs here and there can sign the lesser names off the bat.

What do you guys think, if they had their veteran strikers would they have performed worse? (maybe players expecting Farfan etc. to do more of the work).

Ahh. Thanks. Should be a good game. Just worried that Uruguay will be surprised by Peru.

I can see it happening if Lugano or someone else falls asleep with long balls going past the Uruguayan defenders to some speedy forward who anticipates it. I think that's what kind of happened last time.

Hopefully Forlan being the veteran he is, can keep this team together, running well and keep everyone organized. Plus, he has Suarez on his side,
