Copa Libertadores 2011

The biggest South American tournament is upon us again.

The preliminary first round stage prior to the group stage kicks off later tonight with the current Copa Sudamericana holders Independiente playing Deportivo Quito of Ecuador.

A couple of big sides find themselves in this preliminary round. As well as Independiente, Corinthians against Deportes Tolima of Colombia and Gremio up against Liverpool of Uruguay will all be in action in the next few days.

Independiente 2 Deportivo Quito 0

Result should be enough to see Independiente through.

DeFederico of Huracan fame scored the opening goal that was gifted to him by a defensive mistake and apart from the goal he wasn't very influential in the match. Remains to be seen whether a return to his homeland will kick start his career. Much more impressive was Patricio Rodriguez who came on as sub for the injured Velazquez early on. Scored the second goal and had some impressive runs.To date has been coming on as sub in a lot of matches but you feel soon he will be a starter for Independiente. Looks a very good player.

Juan Paredes was Quito's best and most dangerous looking attacking player. Direct, has pace and can beat a man. The Ecuadorians put themselves about, some big tackles overstepping the mark at times.

Corinthians 0 Deportes Tolima 0

Poor from Corinthians. Really flat in the game. Judging by this match Corinthians are in big danger of being knocked out in the preliminaries. Could have been even worse for them. Murillo was incorrectly called for offside when clean through on goal. The Colombians could easily have been taking a 1-0 lead back with them.

Corinthians were outdone in the midfield by Bolivar and before he came off Castillo. Only when Tolima sat back in the last part of the match did Corinthians have any control. Corinthians also play a very dangerous defensive high line. In the first half Tolima ran through them on numerous occasions. A better team than Tolima would have punished them for being so slack defensively.

Jucilei was the only player to come out with some credit for Corinthians.

Bolivar was Tolima's best player running the midfield.

The other match in Montevideo ended Liverpool 2 Gremio 2

A decent result for the Brazilians. Goalscorers: Liverpool - Franco 6', Macchi 25' Gremio: Andre Lima 4', Douglas 14'

Deportivo Quito 1 Independiente 0 Agg: 1-2

Looks like Independiente had to sweat a little before going through.

Jaguares 2 Alianza Lima 0 Agg:4-0

Comfortable passage for the Mexicans. Could do well in the competition. The Copa has had a trend in recent times of teams doing well who have an Argie playmaker in the side and Damian Manso is a good one.

Deportes Tolima 2 Corinthians 0 Agg:2-0

Goalscorers: Santoya '66, Medina '78

The big story in the preliminaries. Corinthians out of Libertadores.

It wasn't a surprise really considering the way the game went in the first leg and again Corinthians were just not good enough. No standout players and all they could muster in the whole match were a couple of Ronaldo long range efforts.

Tolima didn't play as well as they did in the first leg, not so good in the midfield but they got their goals, Santoya with a perfectly timed run to beat the suspect Corinthians backline to finish well past Cesar and then a simple header for Medina from a Chara cross.

Gremio 3 Liverpool 1 Agg 5-2

Gremio finished off Liverpool at home.

Goalscorers: Gremio: Lima '39, Pacheco 58',74' Liverpool: Alfaro 35'

It's not a big surprise, Corinthians out of Libertadores...Not a traditional team in such a important competition.

Union Española cannot score a measly goal at their home in Santiago..Of course Bolivar couldnt either..and since the Chilean Panaderos won in La Paz, they advance into the Cup.

Fluminense 2 Argentinos Juniors 2

Goalscorers: Fluminense: Moura (2) 58', 74' Argentinos: Niel (2) 44', 71'

Good result for Argentinos in Rio. Could have been even better for them as they had a legit goal ruled out in the first half. Andre Luis cleared the ball but it was already over the line after a penalty box scramble. Draw was a fair result overall though.

Souza was Flu's most dangerous offensive player and they have looked to pick up a good signing in Moura who scored two headed goals in this match. Carrying on from being top scorer in the Copa Sudamericano last time out with Goiás. Flu didn't convince overall in this game although they played well and threatened after both their goals and were pressing near the end for the winner.

Argentinos always kept a threat on the counterattack, Oberman played well in the first half and Basualdo worked hard in the midfield.

For some reason and for quite sometime now...argentinian teams normally do very well when playing the brazucas at their turf.

Velez Sarsfield 3 Caracas 0

Goalscorers: Moralez 44', Ramirez 60', Martinez (pen) 83'

Comfortable home win for Velez. Caracas were reduced to ten men for the majority of the match after having Pena sent off early.

Deportes Tolima 1 Guarani 0

Goalscorer: Santoya

The conquerors of Corinthians get off to a winning home start. In a drab match Bolivar was again Tolima's best player. Guarani hardly offered any offensive threat throughout the match.

Deportivo Tachira 0 Santos 0

Santos somewhat surprisingly held in Venezuela, Neymar et al.

San Luis 1 Libertad 2

Goalscorers: San Luis: Cavallo 39' Libertad: Pavlovich 18', Aquino (pen) 56'

Great away win for the Paraguayans in Mexico.

Club America 2 Club Nacional 0

Goalscorers: Sanchez 4', Vuoso 49'

Nice start for the Mexicans against a tough rival. Nacional will be hoping to recover with their good home form. Difficult to beat in Uruguay.
