Estudiantes Look To Strengthen Ahead Of Copa Libertadores
According to the Argentine press Estudiantes are looking to recruit a striker, playmaker, central defender, left-back and most importantly, a manager, in time for their Copa Libertadores campaign in 2008.
The position of manager looks likely to be filled by former Argentine international Nestor Sensini, who is expected to be presented to the press on Friday.
Although he preferred not to speak directly as if he was guaranteed the job, he did indicate that he understands the level of expectation at Estudiantes following their Apertura triumph last year.
“Although I still do not want to speak as the technician of Estudiantes, I know what the supporters expect from the club due to recent success, starting with the Libertadores,” Sensini told Olé.
“I have no doubt that the players already at the club are ready to achieve great things”.
While Sensini’s words will have come as encouragement to those players currently plying their trade at Estudiantes, it seems that the club’s board do not necessarily agree, as they have sanctioned transfer funds to add four new players to the squad.
Their primary striking target was thought to be UANL Tigres forward Sebastián Abreu, but interest from River Plate and Independiente is likely to curtail any move for the Uruguayan. Estudiantes may instead turn to his compatriot Cristian Bogado of Nacional, or their former striker José Luis Calderón, currently of Arsenal de Sarandi.
No potential playmakers have been earmarked according to the Argentine press, although it is thought that the club will be looking for a small and quick player to go alongside Juan Sebastián Verón in the midfield.
In central defence, they have identified two main targets; Waldo Ponce of Universidad de Chile, who is described as being both good in the air and with the ball at his feet; and Williams Martinez of Defensor Sporting, who previously spent some time on loan at West Bromwich Albion in England for the 2005/06 season.
Finally, at left-back, their dream player would be Juan Ángel Krupoviesa of Boca Juniors, who made his way through the Estudiantes youth ranks and played over one hundred games for the club before joining Boca. However, Boca are unlikely to sell Krupoviesa and Estudiantes may be forced to turn their attention to the Peruvian Juan Vargas, who currently plays for Catania in Italian Serie A.
