My prediction:

Chile 3 - Uruguay 1
Venezuela 2 - Colombia 1
Ecuador 2 - Paraguay 1
Bolivia 2 - Argentina 4
Brasil 4 - Perú 1

That would mean:

1. Argentina 25 pts.
2. Brasil 23
3. Ecuador 19
4 & 5. Chile & Paraguay 16 (0 g.a.)
6. Venezuela 16 (-3)
7. Uruguay 14
8. Colombia 13 (0)
9. Perú 13 (-3)
10. Bolivia 10

Still tight. There's still hope for everyone.

Another striker fror Chile Strikes Out ... Reinaldo Navia comes out of surgery in Chile today looking good and in good spirits, but NO playing time for at least 6 months....With any luck he may be back to action on the 3rd Quarter of 2005...Where as by then the fate of Chile would have been decided, as far as these eliminatories are concerned.

Good Luck "Choro" ....Get well soon !!!!!!

Venezuela Manager Offers Resignation

11/30/2004

Venezuela manager Richard Paez offered to quit if the traditional South American minnows fail to qualify for the 2006 World Cup.
Paez and the Vinotinto face a daunting task, because they reside in the penultimate position in the CONMEBOL qualification table.

However, only three points separate Venezuela from third place.

Navia To Miss Six Months

11/30/2004

Chile's World Cup qualifying hopes took yet another a hit after learning striker Reinaldo Navia would miss the next six months to recover from knee surgery.
The Club America player suffered the injury in mid-November in a Mexican league match. Navia has netted twice for Chile in qualifying, but will miss La Roja's next two qualifiers against Uruguay and Paraguay.

Earlier this month La Roja slipped from fifth to eighth after the 11th round of matches in South America after losing to Peru.

Bolivia coach resigns, blames clubs

LA PAZ, Jan 12 (Reuters) - Bolivia coach Ramiro Blacut has resigned after only nine months in the job, saying he did not get enough co-operation from the clubs.
The 60-year-old, an admirer of German football who had been in charge of the team for the third time, walked out with Bolivia bottom of the 10-nation South American World Cup qualifying group. They have 10 points from 11 games.

'When we played against Brazil, they refused to release the players 10 days beforehand under the argument that there was no point in having so much time to prepare if we were going to lose any way,' he said.

Bolivia were beaten 3-1 in Sao Paulo in last September's game.

'There's no longer the idea that the national team is sacred, today it is directed by interests.'

The Bolivian Football Federation (FBF) said they would name Blacut's replacement by the end of the week.

Bolivia's next qualifier is at home to Argentina on March 26.

Messa to lead Bolivia qualifying bid

LA PAZ, Feb 1 (Reuters) - Former international Ovidio Messa became Bolivia's third coach of their 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign on Tuesday when he was named as the replacement for Ramiro Blacut, who resigned last month.
Messa, who is currently working with the municipal government of Alicante in Spain where he runs a soccer school for teenagers, takes over a team who are bottom of the 10-nation South American group.

'I'll return to La Paz in the middle of this month to co-ordinate my job, which will begin in March,' Messa told ATB television in an interview.

'The president of the Bolivian Football Federation (FBF) told me today that the executive committee had decided I should coach Bolivia in the future.'

Bolivia's next qualifier is at home to Argentina in La Paz on March 26 or 27.

Bolivia, who depend heavily on the home advantage of playing in high-altitude La Paz, have 10 points from 11 games, having already dropped five home points and lost all their away games.

The top four teams qualify directly for the finals in Germany in 2006.

Bolivia began the campaign in September 2003 under former Chile coach Nelson Acosta, who resigned last April after a turbulent spell in which he repeatedly criticised the standard of Bolivian football.

Veteran Blacut then took over for his third stint in charge. But he walked out in January, complaining of in-fighting between the FBF, the professional clubs and the football league.

Messa, 51, played for Bolivia during the 1970s. He has a long history of coaching at youth level and has also been in charge of local first division clubs San Jose, Wilstermann, The Strongest and Blooming.

Chile striker Pinilla buries hatchet with coach

SANTIAGO, Feb 8 (Reuters) -

Chile striker Mauricio Pinilla says he has buried the hatchet with coach Juvenal Olmos in time for Wednesday's friendly at home to Ecuador.

Pinilla said last month that he would in future think twice about playing for his country after originally being left out of the squad.

The Sporting Lisbon player, however, said on Tuesday that he was happy to be included as a last-minute replacement for the injured Marcelo Salas.

"I had some problems (with the coach) but that has been cleared up," Pinilla told reporters.

"I have a special affection for the red shirt. If I have to make sacrifices for the national team, I'm ready."

Last year, Olmos briefly fell out with midfielder David Pizarro. The Udinese playmaker was dropped for the World Cup qualifiers in October against Ecuador and Argentina because of indiscipline before being recalled to face Peru in November.

Bolivia's new coach plans on a long stay

LA PAZ, Feb 17 (Reuters) -

Bolivia's new coach Ovidio Messa says he plans on a long stay in a job where most incumbents last only a few months.

"We've still got a chance in the World Cup qualifiers," Messa, Bolivia's third coach of the qualifying campaign, told local media on Thursday after officially taking charge.

"The target and the dream is to stay for a long time," said Messa who takes over with Bolivia bottom of the 10-nation South American World Cup qualifying group.

"I have a long and ambitious project," added Messa, the ninth man to coach Bolivia since 2000. "I think that, given time, we can form a good team. Anyone who thinks Bolivia are eliminated is being pessimistic."

Messa replaces Ramiro Blacut, who blamed a lack of co-operation from the clubs when he resigned in January after only nine months.

Blacut's predecessor, former Chile coach Nelson Acosta who took over in July 2003, also lasted nine months.

Bolivia used three coaches, Carlos Aragones, Jorge Habbeger and Carlos Trucco during the qualifiers for the 2002 World Cup.

Trucco and Vladimir Soria were used on an interim basis for friendly matches in 2002.

At the start of 2003, Trucco was appointed on a permanent basis before he resigned two months later without a game under his command.

Walter Roque and Dalcio Giovangoli then took it in turns to lead the team for matches against Mexico and Colombia before Acosta took over.

Uruguay set to recall striker Forlan

MONTEVIDEO, March 10 (Reuters) -

Villarreal striker Diego Forlan will be recalled to the Uruguay squad after ironing out his differences with coach Jorge Fossati.

Fossati is set to name a squad on Friday for World Cup qualifiers at the end of March and said on Thursday that former Manchester United striker Forlan would be included.

"We've spoken to Diego and everything's fine, it's all settled and so he will be picked for the next two games," Fossati told reporters.

Forlan had announced in October he was temporarily quitting the Uruguay team because he was not being selected despite making the long trans-Atlantic trips to South America from Europe for 2006 World Cup qualifiers.

Fossati appears to have had a change of heart with Forlan enjoying a rich vein of form playing for Villarreal in Spain where he is Primera Liga top scorer with 16 goals.

Forlan earned a 7.5 million pound ($14.44 million) transfer to Manchester United in 2002 on the back of his scoring feats for Independiente in Argentina but he struggled to nail down a regular first team slot in England and moved to Villarreal last year for three million euros ($4 million).

He last played for Uruguay as a substitute against Argentina in Buenos Aires on October 9, remaining on the bench away to Bolivia three days later and missing the home win over Paraguay in their last qualifier in November.

Inter Milan striker Alvaro Recoba also stepped aside from the Uruguay squad last year because of a lack of form.

Uruguay are away to Chile on March 26 and home to Brazil in Montevideo four days later. They are fifth in the 10-nation South American group from which the top four qualify directly with the fifth playing off against the Oceania zone winners.
