Injured Santa Cruz out of Paraguay squad, Gamarra a doubt

ASUNCION, Sept 30 (Reuters) -

Injured striker Roque Santa Cruz has been left out of the Paraguay squad for next month's World Cup qualifiers while defender and captain Carlos Gamarra is doubtful.

Santa Cruz underwent surgery after injuring a knee during the World Cup qualifier against Venezuela earlier this month and his club Bayern Munich expect him to be out of action for up to six weeks.

Gamarra, who scored the only goal against Venezuela, was included in the squad despite injuring a knee ligament in the same game.

Paraguay, third in the 10-nation South American World Cup qualifying group with 14 points from eight games, are away to Colombia in Barranquilla on October 9 and face Peru in Asuncion four days later.

Coach Anibal Ruiz said it was important not to let Colombia settle.

"Colombia are a team which can't be given space," he said. "They don't like to be pressured. If you let them have possession of the ball and don't hassle them, you can have problems."

Uruguayan Ruiz will have to watch the game from the stands after being sent off during the Venezuela match for protesting to the referee.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Justo Villar (Newell's Old Boys, Argentina), Aldo Bobadilla (Cerro Porteno).

Defenders: Derlis Gomez (Sportivo Luqueno), Denis Caniza (Santos Laguna, Mexico), Julio Cesar Caceres (Nantes, France), Carlos Gamarra (Inter Milan, Italia), Paulo Da Silva (Toluca-Diablos, Mexico), Pedro Sarabia (Cerro Porteno), Julio Manzur (Guarani), Dario Veron (UNAM-Pumas, Mexico).

Midfielders: Angel OrtĂ*z (Libertad), Julio Enciso (Olimpia), Carlos Paredes (Reggina, Italy), Aureliano Torres (Guarani), Diego Gavilan (Internacional, Brazil), Edgar Barreto (NEC Nijmegan, Netherlands), Mauro Monges (Nacional).

Forwards: Raul Roman (Olimpia), Jose Cardozo (Toluca-Diablos, Mexico), Fredy Bareiro (Libertad), Nelson Cuevas (River Plate, Argentina), Cesar Ramirez (Cerro Porteno), Nelson Haedo (Werder Bremen, Germany).

Colombia coach wary of "black beast" Paraguay :dielaugh:

BOGOTA, Oct 5 (Reuters) -

Colombia coach Reinaldo Rueda has warned his players to be wary of Saturday's World Cup qualifying opponents Paraguay, describing them as the black beast.

Paraguay won 2-0 on their last visit to Colombia for a World Cup qualifier four years ago and have held larger neighbours Brazil and Argentina to goalless draws in the current campaign.

"We've had a lot of tough games against Paraguay in the past," Rueda was quoted as saying in the Bogota daily El Tiempo.

"We just have to remember the last World Cup qualifiers in Bogota.

"Paraguay, we already know, is the black beast. They are combative by nature. Their team is mature, they have a goal scorer (Jose Cardozo) in excellent form and they drew away to Argentina."

Colombia are ninth in the 10-nation South American group with eight points from eight games while Paraguay, who are attempting to qualify for their third successive World Cup, are third with 14.

The teams meet in the Caribbean port of Barranquilla on Saturday.

FT Colombia 1-1 Paraguay

I think Colombia played good game, they made good shots and defended well than past

It was nice move by Paraguay to let Nelson Cuevas play instead of Freddy Bareiro...Cuevas was fast and give mobility to Paraguay, not to mention great assist.

Angel missed some chances, but I think he is the still no.1 striker in Colombia
