Elder Dely Valdes dies at 40 after three years in coma

PANAMA CITY, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Panama go into their World Cup qualifier away to El Salvador on Wednesday night mourning the death at the age of 40 of former player and coach Armando Dely Valdes.

Dely Valdes, whose more famous younger brother Julio Cesar has played for some leading clubs around the world, died on Monday in his home city of Colon after being in a coma for nearly three years following a heart attack in 2001.

The elder Dely Valdes played for Argentinos Juniors in the Argentine first division in the mid-1980s and he and his 37-year-old twin brothers Julio Cesar and Jorge did more than anyone to put Panamanian football on the map.

Jorge and Julio Cesar are both in the Panama squad for the CONCACAF second stage group A qualifier in San Salvador. The United States and Jamaica meet in Kingston in the same group.

The globe-trotting Julio Cesar played for Nacional of Uruguay, Cagliari, Paris St Germain and Real Oviedo.
