Sigi Pleased Despite Friendly Loss

03/06/04

Following a 1-0 loss to traditional Brazilian power Săo Paulo, Los Angeles Galaxy coach Sigi Schmid admitted that he was very proud of several reserves that got the midweek call.

"I was pleased with our team's performance,” he offered. “Many of our players that weren't getting as many minutes stepped up and did well.”

”I thought it was a good game that was ruined by an unnecessary red card,” frowned Schmid. “It took away from the game and forced us to play a little differently in the second half.”

”We were a little disappointed to give up a goal in the end - When you do all that work and then give it away at the 85th minute - especially after we got even numbers - it was disappointing."

"Then again, I thought we showed great spirit in the end,” he added. “I thought we very close to equalizing.”

”Some guys gained a lot of points in my mind today by the way they played and that was the most important thing."

Shutout pleases Colombia coach

Colombia beat Argentina in an exhibition at the Orange Bowl and impressed its coach, who is evaluating the team's roster.
A team in an evaluation phase received positive reviews from its coach Sunday night. Colombia, seeking the right formula after a forgettable first phase of qualifiers for the next World Cup, defeated Argentina 2-0 in an exhibition match played in front of a split Argentina-Colombia crowd of 32,415 at the Orange Bowl.

Haiti: Brazil stars to play for peace

BRASILIA, Brazil, June 29 (Reuters) - Brazil's storied team will try to bring peace to Haiti by playing in a match where fans can exchange guns for entry tickets, Brazil's sports minister said on Tuesday.
Brazilian superstars Ronaldo and Ronaldinho are among those who may play soccer-mad Haiti in August to help Brazilian U.N. peacekeeping troops disarm militias and rebuild the poverty-stricken Caribbean nation as it recovers from a bloody revolt.

'Ronaldo's ready to go,' Brazilian sports minister Agnelo Queiroz said. 'They (the top players) want to help in Haiti's peace process.'

Soccer is hugely popular in Haiti, despite years of political turmoil in the poorest nation in the Americas that has sapped funding for the national team. The national soccer stadium is badly run down and security concerns prompted the international soccer federation FIFA to ban official matches in the country.

The guns-for-soccer diplomacy was suggested by Haitian interim Prime Minister Gerard Latortue. He said a few Brazilian soccer stars could do more to disarm warring militias than thousands of peacekeeping troops.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva offered his nation's biggest ever U.N. force of 1,200 to lead a U.N. mission that entered Haiti in June.

It took over from a U.S.-led force sent to halt open warfare in the impoverished former French colony after President Jean Bertrand Aristide was ousted in a February revolt that killed more than 200 people.

Knowing Haitians' love of soccer, U.S. Marines refurbished a soccer field in a city slum to win support.

Lula sent 1,000 balls along with his blue-helmeted troops. He may attend the planned game between Brazil and Haiti. Queiroz said. A venue has yet to be worked out.

Haitians are meanwhile clamoring for Brazil's iconic yellow and green soccer shirts. Some 5,000 are on their way to the nation before the match with Brazil, set for Aug. 18, Queiroz said.

Boca v Chivas Goes Mile High

01/07/04

The Colorado Rapids announced today that Mexican powerhouse Club Deportivo Guadalajara and the World's top ranked soccer team, Club Atlético Boca Juniors from Argentina will clash in an unprecedented game.
The match, presented by title sponsor Coors Light will be played at INVESCO Field at Mile High on Wednesday, July 21 at 8:00 p.m. It will mark the first time that two international sports teams of this caliber have ever played in Colorado.

"The Game of the Year", also organized by the Colorado Rapids, will pit two teams against each other - each the favorite team in their respective countries - Chivas, 10-time winner of the Mexican First Division Championship, and C.A. Boca Juniors, who have conquered the Argentine Championship on 19 occasions. C.A. Boca Juniors has won the Intercontinental Cup twice in the past four years, and has been a finalist on three occasions. The game is the second of four matches that make up the Coors Light 2004 Chivas Rayadas Summer Tournament.

Chivas has established itself as the most recognized and devotedly supported team in Mexico. The club, established in 1906, has won a total of 10 local championships, including four in a row (1959-1962). Continuing a long-lasting tradition, Chivas Rayadas de Guadalajara has conquered all of their national and international championships utilizing only Mexican-born players on their team.

Founded in 1905, Club Atlético Boca Juniors are to soccer in Argentina and the world what the "Yankees" are to U.S. baseball. Considered by many to be the best team in the world, C. A. Boca Juniors have won the Copa Libertadores four of the past five years. They have reached the finals again this year and will go for the title on Thursday, July 1, when they play Colombian Once Caldas in the final leg of this year's championship.

In the Intercontinental Cup, played annually in Japan, C. A. Boca Juniors conquered superpowers Real Madrid and Inter Milan to win the last two titles in the world's most prestigious international club soccer championship.

Chivas and C. A. Boca Juniors will arrive at Denver on Monday, July 19, and will train at INVESCO Field at Mile High prior to the match. Both squads will come to the game with their best available players. Chivas will premiere Benjamín "The Teacher" Galindo, a new coach who was appointed as the new leader of the so-called Sacred Flock last week. C. A. Boca Juniors' Carlos Bianchi, one of the most successful coaches in the world, will lead the destiny of the Argentine side.

Ticket prices for "The Game of the Year" start at $25 dollars for general admission, and $40 and $50 for reserved and VIP seats respectively. Family packages are also available at $50 and include tickets for two adults and two children, 12 and under. The family pack can be purchased up until the day of game. Tickets go on sale Tuesday, July 6 at 10 a.m. through the Rapids Ticket Office at 303-825-GOAL, at the Pepsi Center box office, at the INVESCO Field box office, or via TicketMaster 303-830-TIXS. Colorado Rapids season ticket holders should contact their account representatives at (303) 825-GOAL for special seating opportunities.

Chivas tops Boca Juniors 4-1 in shootout

July 22, 2004

DENVER (AP) -- Jose Vazquez drove 32 hours straight just for the chance to see his hometown team face Argentinian power Boca Juniors.

He didn't have to drive back disappointed.

Goalkeeper Alfredo Talavera stopped consecutive shots in a shootout Wednesday night, helping Mexico's CD Guadalajara beat Boca Juniors 4-1 after the teams played to a 1-1 tie in regulation.

``I compare this to a game when the Yankees play anybody or the Cowboys,'' said Vazquez, of Guadalajara, Mexico. ``This is the best team in the world.''

Guadalajara, also known as Chivas, scored first on Rafael Medina's goal in the 28th minute, and Boca's Mauro Boselli tied it in the 64th minute.

Both teams scored on their first chances in the shootout, then Talavera dived left to stop Pablo Ledezma and Franco Cangele on consecutive shots. Hector Reynoso sealed it on Chivas' fourth kick, trickling a shot down the middle as Boca goalkeeper Wilfredo Caballero dived right.

Arsenal Draw 0-0 With River Plate

7/31/2004

The first game of the Amsterdam Tournament ended goalless as Arsenal played out a drab 0-0 draw with River Plate of Buenos Aires on Friday night.
Arsenal substitute Dennis Bergkamp came closest to breaking the deadlock in his hometown, heading just wide before seeing an 89th-minute close-range shot blocked by Eduardo Tuzzio.

Cesc Fabregas also fired just a few feet wide while Jose Antonio Reyes looked the liveliest of Arsenal’s players.

Cuevas had River Plate’s best chance, but Jermaine Pennant raced back to block his well-struck shot.

The Gunners complete their Amsterdam fixtures against Ajax on Sunday night.

Wenger’s squad was similar to that for Arsenal’s earlier tour matches in Slovenia and Austria. So none of the Euro 2004 players were used, but newly-recruited midfielder Mathieu Flamini was on the bench.

In the tournament's other match on Friday, hosts Ajax beat Panathinaikos 3-2. Arsenal and Ajax meet on Sunday night.

Arsenal: Almunia, Eboue (triallist), Senderos, Cygan, Clichy, Pennant, Fabregas, Ne (triallist), Reyes, Jeffers, van Persie.
Substitutes: Taylor (g), Toure, Hoyte, Gilberto, Flamini, Bergkamp, Aliadiere.

Crespo back for Argentina friendly

BUENOS AIRES, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Former Chelsea team mates Juan Sebastian Veron and Hernan Crespo have been recalled by Argentina for a friendly international away to Japan in Shizuoka on August 18.
Veron and Crespo, now on loan with Inter Milan and AC Milan respectively after not being wanted by new Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho, both missed last month's Copa America in Peru where Argentina reached the final.

Crespo and Argentina coach Marcelo Bielsa agreed the striker should be rested while Veron had not fully recovered from back surgery that curtailed his season in England.

Veron last appeared for Argentina in a World Cup qualifier against Colombia in November.

Also recalled after missing the Copa America are Spanish based midfielders Pablo Aimar of Valencia and Juan Roman Riquelme of Villarreal, Real Madrid defender Walter Samuel and Inter's Esteban Cambiasso, who has recovered from injury.

The squad named on Wednesday by the Argentine Football Association does not include a number of young newcomers who shone in the Copa America and have gone to Athens with Bielsa for the Olympic Games.

Bielsa's assistant Claudio Vivas will be in charge of a squad that includes several uncapped players including Atletico Madrid midfielder Ariel Ibagaza who was called up for last year's Asian tour but had to pull out through injury.

Argentina beat Japan 4-1 in Osaka on that tour, their second victory over the Japanese in seven months.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Oscar Ustari (Independiente), Leonardo Franco (Atletico Madrid, Spain)

Defenders: Facundo Quiroga (VfL Wolfsburg, Germany), Walter Samuel (Real Madrid, Spain), Gabriel Milito (Real Zaragoza, Spain), Diego Placente (Bayer Leverkusen, Germany), Gonzalo Rodriguez (Villarreal, Spain)

Midfielders: Juan Roman Riquelme (Villarreal), Pablo Aimar (Valencia, Spain), Juan Sebastian Veron, Esteban Cambiasso (both Inter Milan, Italy), Lucas Bernardi (AS Monaco, France), Lionel Scaloni (Deportivo La Coruna, Spain), Maximiliano Rodriguez (Espanyol, Spain)

Forwards: Hernan Crespo (AC Milan, Italy), Diego Milito (Genoa, Italy), Mario Santana (Palermo, Italy), Ariel Ibagaza (Atletico Madrid), Luciano Galletti (Real Zaragoza).
