Copa Sudamericana - Colombia/Ecuador: A. Nacional, D. Pasto, Liga Quito, Barcelona

Atletico Nacional

One of the most popular and traditional clubs in Colombia and the only Colombian team to win the Libertadores. They also reached the final of the Sudamericana last year. They have a young squad and would like to make another run at the title this year.

Top players and newcomers: Grisales, Arizala, Calle

Deportivo Pasto
Surprise team of the local tournament last year. They have lost the majority of players that got them to qualify to the Sudamericana. It will be interesting to see what they can do, but they seem to be the weakest team in this bracket.

Liga de Quito
One of the top teams so far in Ecuador this year. They have some very good players and they are serious contenders to advance out of this group.

Top players and newcomers: Carlos Tenorio, Paul Ambrosi, Jacinto Espinoza, Alfonso Obregon, Franklin Salas, Alex Escobar, Virgilio Ferreira

Barcelona de Guayaquil
Apertura champions in Ecuador. New coach for the Clausura and Sudamericana in Ruben Dario Insua who took San Lorenzo to the championship of this tournament last year.

Top players and newcomers: Ariel Graziani, Ivan Hurtado, Ruben Capria, Jose Cevallos, Walter Ayovi, Fricson George, Nicolas Asencio

Liga de Quito vs Barcelona at Casa Blanca Stadium in Quito, Ecuador. 07/27/03 - 7:00PM (local time)

The inaugural game of the Copa Sudamericana 2003. These are two of the best teams in Ecuador. They played over the weekend for the local league and Barcelona won 3-1, though Liga fielded their B team to rest the starters for today's game.

In Liga Carlos Tenorio is out since he was just transferred to a team in Qatar. While in Barcelona Ruben Capria is out due to physical problems to adapt to the high altitude of Quito.

Possible line ups:

Liga de Quito:
Keeper - Jacinto Espinoza
Defenders - Santiago Jácome, Carlos Espínola and Giovanni Espinoza
Midfielders - Neicer Reasco, Alfonso Obregón, Paul Ambrossi, Alexander Escobar
Forwards - Franklin Salas, Ignacio Rizzo and Martín Ojeda.

Coach: Jorge Fossatti

Barcelona:
Keeper - José Cevallos
Defenders - Marcelo Fleitas, Iván Hurtado and Giovanni Caicedo
Midfielders - Rodolfo Graieb, Leonardo Soledispa, Fricson George, Diego Garay, Walter Ayoví
Forwards - Ariel Graziani and Nicolás Asencio

Coach: Ruben Insua

Liga de Quito took the first leg of the opening match against Barcelona.

Liga was clearly the superior team, 2-0 scoreline does not assure them of advancing in this zone.

Deportivo Pasto could not handle Atletico Nacional in their own stadium. Now they have to try to beat the team form Medellin, which is riding pretty high recently.

Oh so sad!!!!:depress:

Barcelona got eliminated of the Copa Sudamericana despite beating Liga de Quito 2-1. The global score was 3-2 in favor of Liga.

This year Barcelona had some very high expectations on both Libertadores and Sudamericana but despite investing heavily on the team, They couldn't get past first round in both competitions.

:depress:

Atletico Nacional and Liga de Quito played a scoreless game for 86 minutes then Colombians scored and that was all she wrote.
