Sudamericana Brasil 1: Santos, Inter, Flamengo, Sao Caetano, Palmeiras and Cruzeiro

Santos
The Libertadores finalist and current brasilian champions are simply loaded. They haven't lost any important player in the transfer market this summer. They want to get their 1st international title in about 40 years.

Top players and newcomers: Diego, Robinho, Ricardo Oliveira. Renato, Alex, Fabio Costa, Elano.

Internacional
The popular team from Porto Alegre is usually a dissapointment when it comes to win something at national or international level, but they are pretty good at the regional level.

Top players and newcomers: Daniel Carvalho, Nilmar, Clayton, Gavilan.

Flamengo
The most popular in Brasil has been going through hard times in recent years. They have not won an international title in over 20 years. The arrival of Oswaldo de Oliveira as coach signals a new process. They will have a very hard time getting to the quarters.

Top players and newcomers: Edilson, Julio Cesar, Fernando Baiano, Igor

Sao Caetano
One of the best and more consistent teams in Brasil over the last few years. Unlike other Brasilian clubs they are example of organization. Not many stars but very tough to beat.

Palmeiras
One of the big teams in Brasilian football but having one of the worst spells in it's sporting life. Playing 2nd division !!! When not long ago was disputing the Libertadores final.

Cruzeiro
Leaders of the Brasileirao with a tremendous attack line, though they did lose a very good striker in Deivid this summer. As long as Alex is comanding their midfield they will be contenders.

Top players and newcomers: Alex, Aristizabal, Cris, Maldonado, Alex Dias

Sao Caetano vs Palmeiras at Sao Caetano do Sul, Brasil. 07/30/03 - 7:00PM (local time)

Sao Caetano is having a below average season for the standards they have set over the last few years, though they are still a strong team. The departure of Nelsinho after 2 games is a bad sign for this club, it appears that Tite might be coming in to replace him as coach. Palmeiras on the other hand is trying to gain promotion to 1st division football.

Possible line ups;

Palmeiras:
Keeper - Marcos
Defenders - Correa, Leonardo, Alceu e Lúcio
Midfielders - Fábio Gomes , Adãozinho , Magrão e Pedrinho; Forwards - Anselmo e Thiago Gentil

Coach: Jair Picerni

Sao Caetano
Keeper - Silvio Luiz
Defenders - Gustavo, Serginho e Dininho
Midfielders - Marlon, Marcelo Mattos, Mineiro, Capixaba e Zé Carlos
Forward = Adhemar e Marcinho

Coach: Nelsinho Baptista

Edu Dracena scored the goal that eliminated Palmeiras off the competition. Cruzeiro won away 0-1 and now will meet Sao Caetano in what promise to be a game two of the best teams in the tournament!!!

Santos on the other hand drew 1-1 at home with Internacional. And now is going be a game of beating on hapless Flamengo
to see who advances to the next round.

Today, August 27 results:

Internacional 3 (Jefferson Feijao[2], Elder) - Flamengo (Ze Carlos) 1
With the result Flamengo is out but still have one game left, when he will host the game against Santos. Santos will need a victory with 2 or more goals to go ahead.

Cruzeiro (Marcio) - Sao Caetano 1 (Ze Carlos)
Sao Caetano is classificated to the next round , waiting for the decision of Santos/Internacional.

I am not surprised about the results at all, Cruzeiro has been on a downturn lately and they are having a hard time coping the exit of players over the transfer window.

While Internacional is simply a better team than Flamengo and showed their class yesterday. BTW Granja was pretty impresive, same goes for Feijao.

The funny thing is :
The Majority of teams that used backstage politics to come to this Competition are being eliminated. But the damage was more than enough, their abuse of "B" teams and constant attacks to the competition vallue have caused a small acceptance of the competition here in Brazil , so it looks like we brazilians are going to screw up another competition...:depress:

I will wait a few more years before saying that Brazilians will screw up this competition. Remember it took years for the Brasilians to take the Libertadores seriously. Right now is probably the most important tournament in a Brasilian team calendar.

Brazilians indeed had a lack of faith for Libertadores during the 60's and 70's. but that was caused by Santos attitude ,that after winning it and facing the difficult of facing the other's "spanish" teams and all the "extra-field" stuff that happened, gave up the competition for more profit. When the "extra-field" stuff was reduced and libertadores added a extra money, we returned.
But remember- We did that with Comebol - when we started to send our clubs by invitation or odd competition and Mercosul, when the political fight for the places turned to be to focused.
Right now, the media here treats this new cup as a "useless money hunting" and that can destroy the competition here for sure.

Santos need to beat an already eliminated Flamengo by more than 2 goals to go through to the next round.

I say they will beat them by 3 goals.

And Santos won by 3-0 the game against Flamengo in Maracana, William scored 2 and Leo scored the "saving goal" 3 minutes before the end of the game.
Next round
Santos - Sao Caetano.

Santos is pushing hard to win his competition. I guess something like a Libertadores 2nd chance for them.
