Star players swamped

I’ve seen the following superstars swamped by defenders in world cups in a manner that they never were in their club careers. Ronaldo9, Ronaldinho, Messi, Neymar. They hardly have any time or space on the ball. They do amazing dribbles for their clubs but in the World Cup they are a lot less spectacular. If you showed the best of Ronaldo9 in a World Cup you would think he was a penalty box striker, even what he did in 1998. Are the defenders simply more motivated to stopping these players or are their international teammates that inferior to their club teammates that the defenders don’t bother about the teammates and only focus on stopping the star player?

A lot of club teams have poor defensive organization. Same is true for some national teams but maybe less so especially when they want to defend their country's honour.
