Tuchel post-match interview:
His team dominated their opponents for 45 minutes, though in the second half the gruelling journey back from the Caspian Sea took its toll. Yet BVB still ran out 5-1 winners. “We felt our lead was safe and therefore created less,” said Thomas Tuchel.
How satisfied are you with the match?
Of course I’m very pleased. We created many chances for ourselves, but we also know that we had to defend it. And all of that after a gruelling journey.
In the first 30 minutes, Augsburg hardly got a look in. Were your team trying to force the result early on?
We opted for a very bold defensive approach, because we know how good they can be when they are allowed to play. Our front-line were very hard working and put in a real shift.
Do you prefer to concentrate on the 75 minutes of good football or the 15 minutes after the break when things weren’t going so well?
The 75 good minutes are definitely at the forefront for me. In the poor 15 minutes the journey really took its toll. We felt our lead was safe and therefore created less.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang explained that he bet with his brother that he’d donate something to his family if he scored three goals…
I wonder how he can be so certain that I won’t substitute him in the 80th minute. He’ll have to be a bit faster if he wants to pull off these bets (laughs). But in all seriousness, when you see how pleased he was when Marco scored, like he did in Mainz, and when Miki scored and he set them both up, then my heart soars. He is a complete team-player, he gives a lot to the team and in return gets a lot back, which is fantastic.
