2012 AFC U-19 Championship

Thought Jeff would have been on this one.

Tournament got underway on 3 November in the UAE.

Top four from this go to the 2013 U20 World Cup in Turkey.

Perhaps the most notable result so far in the comp was Iran beating Japan 2-0. Maybe Iran will have a new upspring of good young players which the great number of supporters of Iran deserve.

The clubs who have sent their staff of the scouting department to cover the AFC U-19 Championship 2012 are: Borussia Dortmund, Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Monchengladbach, Liverpool FC, NEC Nijmegen, Az Alkmaar and AS Monaco.

Maybe you can update the thread and watch some of the matches.

There are still group games left before the knockout matches.

Not sure if it's being televised here. Maybe eurosport will cover it, they sometimes screen football tournaments that may not be classified as "mainstream" or whatever.

Well Japan got the draw that was needed to see them qualify for the knockouts but they were skating on thin ice at times in the second half against UAE although they created a couple of good scoring chances themselves.

No standout players from Japan in this one. It can be politely be described as a workmanlike performance from Japan.

The Japanese CF looks like he is picked more for his strong physical presence rather than as a real talent. 18yo Yuya Kubo who plays for Kyoto Sanga in the Japanese 2nd Division.

UAE defended their flanks well and stopped any threat that Japan tried to offer there with the attacking fullbacks.

Iran won the group and finished off in style smashing Kuwait 6-0.

Two quarter finals now set:

Iran v S.Korea and Iraq v Japan. All quarter finals to be played on 11 November.

I'd actually read that Dortmund were scouting this guy a lot.

Any particular players you like on this Iranian team?

Well he didn't look that good today.

Maybe he is capable of better.

Like said he is a tall striker. Looks quite strong but his overall play today wasn't that good but you could say that about all the Japanese offensive players today.

I haven't been able to watch this comp up until today.

UAE v Japan was the first match I have seen.

Uzbekistan had a good 2-0 win over the last winners of this North Korea in their last group game.

China finished the tournament with zero points. Seems a bit crazy that a nation that seems so fixated on sporting prowess e.g. the olympics can't put together a decent football team.

So all the QFs are set now.

Iran v S Korea

Iraq v Japan

Uzbekistan v Syria

Australia v Jordan

All ties to be played on 11 November.

Uzbekistan beat Syria on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regulation time, South Korea smacked Iran 4-1, so much for a new top generation of Iran players, Australia comfortable winners over Jordan 3-0 and Japan are out. They lost 1-2 to Iraq. Not that surprised that Japan have gone after watching them in their last group match.

Semi-finals to be played on the 14 November:

South Korea v Uzbekistan

Iraq v Australia.

Shame to me at least that the Uzbeks and the Koreans meet in the semis. Would have liked that to be the final match up.

Forgot to mention that of course the four semi-finalists now qualify for the 2013 U20 World Cup in Turkey.

Japan won't be there. Unusual not to see them in the U20 World Cup.

Hopefully Australia can finally start producing some good talent. The current Socceroos set-up still relies on the likes of Cahill, Neill, Schwarzer, Bresciano, Archie Thompson, and other average guys playing in the Middle East. Only a few young guys being given a shot like Fortuna Dusseldorf's Robbie Kruse, and Utrecht's Tommy Oar. I don't know what's going on with the guy Dortmund bought, Amini.

In the semis South Korea beat Uzbekistan 3-1 and Iraq beat Australia 2-0.

Final to be played tomorrow. South Korea favourites, their record in this competition is second to none although the Iraqi's are claiming "home" advantage.

Iraq came so close to beating South Korea in the final. They were leading 1-0 only for the Koreans to equalise right at the death in injury time. South Korea then went on to win the penalty shoot out.

South Korea win their 12th title.

Mohanad Abdulraheem of Iraq was voted MVP of the tournament:

Igor Sergeev of Uzbekistan won the top goalscorer award with seven goals:

Other individual players to have positive reviews from the tournament were:

Changjin and Kang Sangwoo of South Korea:

Corey Gameiro of Australia:
