Women's World Cup

Norway's first match in the World Cup is against Canada, on the 12th of September.

Here are the groups that were drawn today:

Group A
Germany
Japan
England
Argentina

Group B
Nigeria
USA
North Korea
Sweden

Group C
Norway
Ghana
Australia
Canada

Group D
China
New Zealand
Brazil
Denmark

I think it's fair to say that on paper, Norway got nearly the best draw possible. Should give us a good chance of going far.

Yes, I agree with you that Norway probably did get just about the best possible draw that they could have received.

Norway was really fortunate not to end up again with Brazil in their group like they did in 2003 or even one of the other Scandinavian nations.

WC Draw & FIFA Rankings

The U.S. on the other hand ended up with arguably the worst possible draw for the second straight WC with three of FIFAs top five ranked nations in the same group.

The final groups with their FIFA World Rankings helps to show how much more difficult Group B is on paper compared to Norway's Group C:

Group A
#2 Germany
#9 Japan
#12 England
#32 Argentina

Group B
#1 USA
#4 Sweden
#5 Korea DPR
#24 Nigeria

Group C
#3 Norway
#10 Canada
#14 Australia
#48 Ghana

Group D
#6 Denmark
#8 Brazil
#11 China PR
#23 New Zealand

Earlier today over on another 'fotball' message board I saw these rankings posted along with the following averages:

Group A - 55 (average of 14)
Group B - 34 (average of 9)
Group C - 75 (average of 19)
Group D - 48 (average of 12)

World Cup Draw

Here's some of what San Diego Union-Tribune reporter Mark Zeigler wrote about the WC draw in yesterdays GOAL! section:

Quote:
FIFA appears to be up to its old draw shenanigans, mysteriously “placing” North Korea in Group B with the No. 1-ranked United States before the draw for the 2007 Women's World Cup was conducted Sunday in Wuhan, China. It made for a brutal first-round group for the Americans – 2003 runner-up Sweden and African champion Nigeria are also in it – but also ensures that China, the host, has a path to the semifinals that does not include Germany, Sweden, North Korea or the United States, regarded by many as the best four teams in the 16-nation field.

After taking another look at the draw this morning, I was wondering if it was actually possible for the U.S. to have had a more difficult draw than the one they actually got and if it was possible for Norway's draw to have been any better than it was?

Just judging by the draw, New Zealand would have been tougher than Nigeria, but not much. I'm confident that USA will pull it off though, and I see them as favourites for the tournament.
