Football in St. Petersburg

This week, whilst researching a little bit about the magnificent city of St. Petersburg, I came across an article which claimed that Zenit was the city's only club:

Quote:
St. Petersburg's one and only football team, FC Zenit, has many shops all over the city. They were catapulted to fame after winning the UEFA cup and then the UEFA Super cup in the same year back in euphoric 2006. To show your support you can buy anything from a small pin badge, one of the latest team strips, or even the teams bed spread.

I found that assertion quite astonishing, and upon investigation discovered that it was bogus. St. Petersburg has at least two senior clubs, the other being FC Dynamo St. Petersburg. The Wikipedia article states that:

Quote:
The club is one of the oldest clubs in Saint Petersburg, and until 1984 was the most popular football club in Saint Petersburg.
Does anybody know much more about the club? It seems a shame that it's been eclipsed by Zenit to such an extent that its existence is no longer even acknowledged...

What is now called Dynamo St. Petersburg is really FC Petrotrest. No history, no fans. And they were playing in the Amateur League a couple of years ago. At that point Zenit really was the only professional football team in the city.

Yes their Wikipedia page mentions that the club has gone through a rather turbulent period. However, is it true that Zenit didn't emerge as the biggest club in the city until 1984? If so that's quite amazing.

Are you from St. Petersburg? I'm not sure whether you've seen my post on another thread, but I'm wondering where I could buy a Dynamo Moscow shirt when visiting St. Petersburg?

I wouldn't say Dynamo was more popular than Zenit before 84 but both had good support. As for buying a shirt, sorry mate, I've been living in Canada since I was young. Buying online might be your best shot.

Thanks for your reply. I'd buy online, only I like to see what I'm purchasing - ensure it fits, feel the fabric - especially given the delivery costs. I'd imagine that there's a shop somewhere in St. Petersburg that'd sell them, given the size of the city, if not several. It's just that I'll only be there for three days, and most of that time I'll be doing other things.

As for Dynamo St. Petersburg, it amazes me that supporters would switch allegiance or stop supporting their club like that. I live in Scotland, where Rangers began anew in the fourth tier of Scottish football last season, but attracted an average gate of more than 40,000!

I read on the other thread, regarding Zenit's new stadium, that Dynamo will be moving into the existing stadium. Hopefully Dynamo will flourish and get into the top flight.

Spartak was more popular than both up until 15 years ago or so.
