FC Porto v Zenit St Petersburg (Champions League Round 3)

Crucial match for Zenit who have started poorly in the group, if we can take either a minimum of 4 points from these 2 matches we will have qualification back in our hands. When the teams met in the Champions League group stage 2 years ago Zenit drew 0-0 in Porto and won 3-1 at home.

Zenit are in fine domestic form and currently sit 8 points clear at the top after yesterdays 2-0 win v CSKA.

If we could win this match, we could almost tie up qualification by beating them in the return match in Russia.

As far as team selection is concerned, I would expect a certain amount of rotation from yesterdays team -

Lodygin
Ansaldi in place of Smolynkov
Hubocan in place of Neto
Lombaerts
Criscito although he might lose his place to Smolynkov
Fayzulin in place of Witsel he is suspended? We couldnt appeal?
Danny
Hulk
Shirokov
Shatov in place of Zyrianov
Kherzakov in place of Arshavin

5 new players to come into the team from the team that defeated CSKA Moscow which will make things fresh.

Lets do this Zenit!

I think Arshavin will start. Spaghetti subbed him off early to keep him fresh. Also wouldn't be surprised to see Anyukov start. He's better than Smolnikov defensively and I expect us to need to defend a fair bit.

I will if we play with 5 at the back again though. Spalletti is such a mental midget in Europe though so it wouldn't surprise me.

many doubts regarding zenit tactic and 11.

anyukov is no better than smolnikov nowadays though smolnikov was mediocre yesterday.

ansaldi will start.

it can be a 4-4-2 or a 4-3-3.

you should play in a 4-4-2,four in the middle not three.

european games are won in the midfield and zenit one have no defensive strenght there.
all the players are better attacking than defending.

Is Witsel available?

Is there a right to appeal for Champions League matches?

That was one of the worst sending offs I have ever seen.

Smolynkov is better than what you think.

He is great attacking and really gets stuck in defending.

He has been a good signing.

Ansladi and Criscito are the first choice full backs when everyone is fit with Anyukov and Smolynkov on the bench but Smolynkov has been very impressive so much so, Spalleti will keep giving him a game and waiting for a poor game or a defensive lapse before he drops him.

Will be interesting to see who plays at full back in Portugal, I wouldn't rule out Smolynkov, Ansaldi and Criscito all playing with either Criscito playing as an extra CB or Ansaldi playing in mid to give us a bit more defensive edge.

CDG, how exactly are Ansaldi and Criscito first choice fullbacks for Zenit when neither one has ever played a game for Zenit on the right?

Zenit will be back 1200 fans for tonight's match in Portugal.

Not to sure how we will line up, I wouldn't rule out Ansaldi, Smolynkov and Criscito all starting with Criscito being used as a CB or one of the players being used in midfield to give a defensive edge.

Lodygin
Criscito
Hubocan or Neto if Hubocan is injured
Lombaerts
Ansaldi
Smolynkov
Fayzulin
Shirokov
Danny
Hulk
Kherzakov

Witsel is out due to suspension and Malfafeev has stayed back in Russia.

I don't think Kerzha will play. Hulk, Danny, Shava the front three. Shirokov, Faizulin and Shatov in midfield.

I'm really glad Spaghetti went with Shatov over Zyryanov. The kid has tons of potential. Hopefully he rewards the faith in him today.

Lets do this Zenit.

Shatov isn't no dm.

I like our front 4, they seem to have a great understanding of each others game and with Shirokov, we will create a decent amount of chances.

As long as we get at least a point we will regain and control our own destiny again, 3 points would be booom!
