Zenit in Europe 2013/14

So the CL third qualifying round draw is tomorrow. Fenerbahce just had their ban lifted which means that Zenit's possible opponents for this round are:

Greece PAOK
Austria Red Bull Salzburg
Denmark NordsjŠlland
Switzerland Grasshopper
Belgium Zulte Waregem

PAOK and Red Bull Salzburg would be the ones I would most like to avoid.

First legs are July 30/31st, second legs a week after.

There all something of a muchness, don't see anything but plain sailing.

I'm sure Kleber will give us his expert opinion shortly.)

When was the last time Zenit had plain sailing against anyone in Europe? Don't you remember Nacional? or Auxerre?

This won't be a walkover, I remember Nordsjaelland almost beat Juventus last season. Combined with our terrible away form in Europe, we have to approach this first leg with caution.

So the game against Nordsjaelland is now a bit less than 24 hours away. Hopefully we play a decent away game in Europe for once.

Spalletti said that he plans to play Hulk tomorrow which can only help.

I hope we win but a scoring draw wouldn't be the worst thing in the world either.

Edit: no Malafeev, Shirokov or Anyukov for this game.

It is going to be a tough game no doubt.

Here is a preview on the Danish team if interesting- http://russianfootballnews.com/zenit...e-wild-tigers/

Making the Group Stages is a must in my opinion.

I'm assuming Hubocan, and Neto will play right back like he did at the end of our last game.

They really arent the same team now though, they have lost Okore and Joshua John, plus they have some key players out injured/just returning from injury. Zenit really should be winning this comfortably

Bystrov in the second half could really help getting behind that defense...

Wasn't exactly the most inspiring performance but should be good enough to get through to the next round. Tymo at RB was dreadful, need Anyukov for the return leg.

Why is the slowest player on the team being used as a fullback? What am I missing from a tactical perspective here?

Not the first time either, Tymo played left back earlier this season too.

I know I remember that. He's been used out of position more often than not ever since his first move from Zenit.

Artificial pitch, injury crisis, away match against a team who held Juventus in the Champions League last season and what do we get? Away win and an away goal, oh yer baby!

Now who on earth would not be happy with that? Well I know a certain PortoGeezer who would not be happy.)

Gorgeous pass by Hulk and sublime finish by Kherzakov.

Bad day at the Office for Arshavin who should have got on the scoresheet in the first half, whilst the performance wasn't amazing, we were very comfortable and given the factors listed above we were pretty comfortable and never under any real sustained pressure. The most important thing is Football is the result and we got it.
