NHS is a health service with many flaws, but the fact it exists at all, & still exists in the age of privatise-everything is something to be genuinely proud of.
It was also achieved after our country was financially, morally and mentally destroyed by the war. It means a huge amount to British people, as much as we knock it they do a fantastic job.
Anyway, I really liked the opening ceremony. Boyle hit all the right notes, the only thing that would have made it better would be to use our names better. Get Mick Jagger, Bowie, McCartney, Daltrey, Clapton etc. all on stage for a mashup of their music. Instead we get Dizzee, who I actually like and I suppose he represents east london but when you have so many great names available why not use them. Needed Joy Division music too!
Same with the inventors, great we got the inventor of the www but why not a parade of people like Dr Higgs after what he has recently achieved, the scientists from CERN etc.. I suppose it would be hard to arrange it all but thats the only thing that would have improved things imo.
My favourite bit was the industrial age making the Olympic rings, absolutely amazing. Fantastic effect of red hot iron and the towers being raised. Nice that Brunel was center of it too, one of our greatest individuals. Loved the nightmare scene as well to highlight our literature, basically shows how great we have been in creating things. Music, art, poems, stories, inventions, games, sport etc. our greatest attributes. Also a special mention to the LED pixels in the crowd to get everyone involved, looked great. They seem built in so hopefully see it used often through the olympics. Quite proud of this after all the usual British moaning, congratulations to Danny Boyle on a fantastic job.
