Who will be the king of the track?

Some interesting things happening on the track and we could be in for a great 100m final in London.

So basically, you all know the freak that is Usain Bolt, reigning Olympic champion and world record holder for both the 100m and the 200m.

His form has declined slightly since the world championships in 2009 where he last broke the world record.

Over the last half decade his main rival has been the American Tyson Gay, who is the only man who has come close to matching the freakish times Bolt has run. His form too has slightly declined, yet nothing out of the ordinary.

The strongest new contender is the current world champion (after Bolt was disqualified) and the man who just beat Bolt over both the 100m and the 200m at the Jamaican trials - Yohan Blake.

Blake has improved his times drastically over the past few seasons, including a ridiculous 19.26 in the 200m last season. His best for the 100m is 9.75 which he ran 3 days ago.

Another contender who has popped up somewhat out of the blue is the disgraced former Olympic champion in 2004, Justin Gatlin. He was banned for doping and has picked up form since returning after a 4 year ban. Days ago he clocked an impressive 9.80 [his personal best] to beat Tyson Gay at the US Olympic trials.

So, can any of these men stand in the way of Usain Bolt in his pursuit to become just the second man to defend his 100m title at the Olympics (and the first to actually do it, no disrespect Carl but you won it on a technicality)?

Leaving Asafa Powell out of this because he's a choker.

TL;DR,

Usain Bolt
Personal Best: 9.58 (2009)
Season Best: 9.76

Yohan Blake
Personal Best: 9.75
Season Best: 9.75

Tyson Gay
Personal Best: 9.69
Season Best: 9.86

Justin Gatlin
Personal Best: 9.80
Season Best: 9.80

Bolt, if he sticks to his diet of nuggets during the Olympics
Otherwise Yohan Blake.

Feeling Blake is going to be serious challenger for Usain, the battle between them is going to be the only reason to watch the Olympics for me

Usain Bolt. No way he fails to get gold at the grandest stage of all for runners.

What's really scary is the Jamaican relay team.

In addition to Bolt and Blake, Asafa Powell is also still a strong sub-10 sprinter and Michael Frater also cracked sub-10 at the Jamaican trials.

If they keep Powell as the last leg of the relay, then it's a tough choice between Bolt and Blake for the second leg (the other straight). Unless they drop the baton, no one should stand in their way, and they could even push for another world record.

Whoever runs the 2nd leg for Jamaica will largely depend on form and preparation. Given both Bolt and Blake are also competing in the 200m, they are more than capable of clocking quick sprint times over the curve as well. Jamaica is a lock-on for gold in the 4x100m relay, unless they drop the baton.

100m heats all done.

Tyson Gay, Justin Gatlin, Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell and Yohan Blake all winning easily as expected. Ryan Bailey winning his heat in the best time by far with a 9.88. Dwain Chambers wins the other heat.

Of them all, Bolt and Powell looked the most relaxed, which tells two different stories. Bolt is usually a slow starter so for him to do it that easy is a good sign. Powell always dies out towards the end, so the fact that he blitzed the field over 60m and let up for 40m and still won doesn't say a lot.

Bailey's time speaks louder than it was - he was the only one who really pushed himself hard from start to finish. Still, 9.88 in a heat is definitely not a time to dismiss so easily.

Should be a good final with 6+ very capable sprinters, provided they all get there.

Kim Collins didn't run in his heat because he spent the night with his wife at her hotel. Not really sure what that's about, but it sounds ****ed up.

Can't believe Dwain Chambers hasn't got any mention so far.

Anyway I've got a Gay feeling this year.

Perhaps because he's 34, has a best of 9.97 which he ran years ago, and is racing against guys who have pulled times this season which are 0.2s faster than that.

Bolt in 9.63!

Not the best start but he absolutely hunted them all down.

Blake in 9.75 in second, Gatlin third and Gay misses a medal by 0.01.

Asafa Powell seems to have pulled his hamstring, otherwise every other finalist finished with a time under 10. Amazing.

Usain Bolt, first man to actually defend his Olympic 100m title

Edit - Amazing, this must be the fastest 100m race of all time.

what a race

it occurred to me though, that I will never see something quite as incredible as the Beijing 2008 100m final. Even though this race was probably the fastest race ever collectively, even though Bolt ran the 2nd fastest race in history, nothing will ever beat that night in Beijing where Bolt obliterated the field and blew away the World record that very first time.

Greatest sportsman ever.
