Europa League 14/15: Zenit Too Good

3rd Qualifying round vs. 2nd division Austrian side St. Pölten, 0-0 at HT (in first leg), missed first 30 odd mins only got home from work.

St. Pölten had best chance in the game from what I've seen, someone got in behind our defense, squared it across goal, man closest to it dived in attempts to win a penalty (wasn't successful).

Ritzmaier had a shot from outside the box go just wide was closest I've seen PSV come to scoring. PSV haven't been able to do anything in St. Pölten's half other than knock it to De Jong and hope he gives a good lay off for someone...

PSV created space on the left and Narsingh became free, Hiljemark switched the play to him he ran to the by line and crossed over the keeper where De Jong was able to head in from less than a meter a way 1-0.

Jozefzoon 2 yellow cards for diving

1-0 win is a decent result for the 2 legged affair. A win for a Dutch side! though obviously expected more against an Austrian 2nd division side

He was really just a target man for most of the game, PSV created very little in their half, he made no mistake in taking his goal (was on a plate, but I've seen Toivonen miss similar chances on numerous occasions so it was nice to see a chance like that actually get taken). He did a defensive run (think he was covering for Brenet) that you wouldn't see Matavz/Locadia ever making where he tracked back the whole way with the St. Pölten player and blocked his cross little things like that were very positive to see.

He got himself a booking for what was a bit of a clumsy high foot, he deserved a booking but really didn't mean to hit the player at all. Was a good performance from him as an individual but PSV are playing at very slow tempo so overall PSV were unimpressive.

I think PSV needed a target man. Only one game but it's good to see he's already doing well.
The line up looked very defensive last night btw. But I reckon that might have been because of the low quality defence, to ensure you didn't concede an away goal. Are PSV still in the market for a centre-back?

There is talk of us wanting at least 4 new players, 2 Centre Backs, a forward and a midfielder according to Gerbrands (general manager). We do need at least 1 more CB and a midfielder but I think a new LB is a must, I don't rate Tamata defensively at all and isn't great getting forward (he might be better as a RB but we don't need him). Gerbrands has also said that if PSV can't get their first choices (e.g. Defour/Rekik are examples of players PSV are known to be interested in) PSV already know who they will go after instead of their first choices.

Marcel Brands has claimed deals for Defour and Rekik should be rounded off after the weekend, not sure if there is a lot of truth in that, will wait and see what happens.

Expected line-up for tonights game in Austria (2nd Leg):

Zoet

Arias - Bruma - Hendrix - Ritzmaier

Hiljemark

Wijnaldum - Maher

Narsingh - de Jong - Memphis

So the WC boys are back which means Ritzmaier moves to LB. Luuk preferred to Locadia.

That line up with a couple of additions could really challenge for the title. Also if Maher gets his act together.

Hopefully Arias, Wijnaldum and Depay can make a difference. Them instead of Brenet, Tamata and Locadia is a big improvement. This could end up in an easy win. Polten has to come out of their shell and give away space now.

I agree. The current squad is not good enough (especially the back-ups), but with some good reinforcements PSV has one of the strongest squads in the Eredivisie. Then it's time to make a real team out of it, that has been the biggest struggle in the last couple of years.

Can't see PSV winning the title this season, also won't be able to watch the 2nd leg, hopefully won't be seeing a shocking scoreline (as in an upset for PSV) when I can see the results later...

No Depay, Arias and Wijnaldum. Well, maybe later in the game.

And we have gotten ourselves a new centre back?

So Polten has to score atleast three times now, is not going to happen. Hopefully some more entertainment in the second half.

Long range shot of Polten with Zoet slipping away resulted in the 1-1..
