08/17/2002. PSV Eindhoven have begun their season with a convincing 2-0 win over newly promoted Excelsior. Last seasons runners-up struck after just three minutes through highly-rated midfielder Mark Van Bommel. Arnold Bruggink added a second after 17 minutes and effectively wrapped up the three points there and then.
Heerenveen, who finished fourth last season, threw away a lead away to AZ three times in a six goal thriller, while NAC Breda were also guilty of failing to hold onto their advantage. Roda JC came from 2-0 down away from home to snatch a draw, with the equaliser coming just five minutes from time.
Willem II began their campaign with an impressive 2-0 win away to FC Twente with second half goals from Tarik Sektioui and Dimitri Shoukov.
On Friday night newboys RBC and FC Zwolle drew 1-1 in the opening match of the Dutch season.
