Dutch Clubs in Europe 2016/17

Beginning of a revival for the coefficient this season with the reduced five teams representing the league? Or same-old stories of Eredivisie's finest being knocked out by a second tier Latvian cup winner?

Below are the possible draws for Ajax, AZ and Heracles:

Ajax kent mogelijke tegenstanders

Ajax face PAOK Salonika. Home leg first.

Ajax are the better side, but Rapid Vienna were the underdogs last time...

Heracles have drawn Arouca of Portugal, who finished 5th last season.

AZ have got either Giannina of Greece or Odd BK from Norway. Most likely the Greek side though.

Ajax 60-40 chance of winning?

AZ with new strikers the same? The Norwegians being match fit could be trickier. Not that I know much about either side

Heracles - Arouca. Portugese are always favs against Dutch sides regardless and esp if these guys finished 5th

Ajax and AZ really should be getting through quite comfortably against these Greek sides. Key word being should

I'm not expecting anything of Heracles. On paper they are underdogs

I actually fancy Heracles to beat Arouca if they continue the same form as last season. On paper they should lose though.

Can see Ajax slipping up after the preseason they've had.

Heracles 1 - 1 Arouca

AZ 1 - 0 Giannina

Didn't watch though

Watched second half of AZ game. Apparently they were much better first half because what I saw was a little lacklustre. Giannina are pretty bad though.

Saw last 30 minutes of Heracles' game, Arouca played for the result, Heracles were clueless in final third. Bel Hassani and Bruns had poor decision making, Bel Hassani doesn't pass the ball forward only dribbles slowly towards oppositions goal. If what I heard of the first leg is true they really shouldn't have let them score because they don't look like they can, other than long range efforts, but Heracles couldn't create a chance, shot everywhere but the goal. Would be shocked if Arouca can win their playoff. Navratil looked bad too, Heracles aren't a side you would expect to see in European competitions anyway, but they could do better than Arouca.

AZ did their part with a 1-2 away win in second leg.

Real shame about Heracles. Literally another wasted spot, although they did rack up some coefficient points with 2 draws.

Good job by AZ.

Holland really needs a strong year here. Obviously it's down to Feyenoord and PSV to save the nation!

Heracles deserved more based on the first game.

Draw is today at 13:00, lets hope for some positive draws.

Ajax-Rostov in the final CL preliminary round.

They knocked out Anderlecht, so they're definitely no push overs, but I think Ajax should be able to pull this off.

AZ drew Serbians Vojvodina.

Two Dutch teams in UCL and two in the Europa League would be healthy for the coefficient.

Vojvodina used to have the colourful Ratko Butrovic as their chairman

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ratko_Butorovi%C4%87 ( at his career, starting with smuggling stolen clothes from Italy)

I'm not familiar with anyone from their current team.

Yeah, may he rest in peace. What a character though!

I'm sure you know Meleg, who used to be at Ajax and Cambuur for a while. He's currently one of their best if not their best player. Vojvodina have a young, mostly domestic squad with a perspective young Serbian manager.

AZ last year though lost twice to Partizan and I'd say this Vojvodina is marginally the lesser side out of the two. Main difference would be Andrija Zivkovic, who is now at Benfica. So they'll have to be cautious. Meanwhile Vojvodina last year beat Sampdoria 0-4 away and advanced 4-2 on aggregate to the play-offs.

They are definitely no push-overs and AZ will have a game on their hands, but I think it would be a major surprise if Vojvodina went through over 2 legs.

Vojvodina 0-3 AZ

in first leg, Friday scored one, Stijn Wuytens scored 2, including a good freekick. AZ shouldn't throw this away but I've seen as crazy things happen.

All seems lost ... based on what was leaked so far (mostly Basel president B.Heusler who was part of the committee that voted on the new reforms):

League 1-4: 4 spots each
League 5-6: 2 spots each
League 7-10: 1 spot each
CL winner: 1 spot
EL winner: 1 spot
Champion Route Qs: 4 spots
League Route Qs: 2 spots

Top 10 in the 2017 ranking is out of reach ... that will be the cut-off for a direct CL berth instead of top 12 in the current format ... ATM Turkey is ranked 10th (32.200) and Holland 15th (24.063) but Croatia (13th) and Greece (14th) should be overtaken ... looks like Holland won't get a direct CL berth, no League Route Qs and the Dutch champion (2017/18) will have to qualify for the 2018/19 CL group stage first ... 4 spots on offer via the Champion Route ... Holland might get a guaranteed play-off spot and probably the Dutch champion (2017/18) will be seeded ... can't afford to trip up or no CL.

Good week for the coefficient. Feyenoord and Ajax with wins plus a draw from AZ. PSV undone by shit refereeing.

Maccabi Tel Aviv have some handy players like the Icelandic striker and Haris Mendunjanin. Also the amusingly named Tal Ben Haim II, so AZ´s loss wasn´t a shock looking at the mediocre form they´re in. Annoying for Holland´s European ranking though.
