The quest for the poverty title - And the winner of 2012/13 is...

24 rounds down, 10 to go.

Like last season this is more than just a two horse race, but the balance has shifted and also the outsiders have different names now.

Last season Ajax already started it's 14 game sprint, in our slipstream Feyenoord had a good run as well and AZ suffered from it's international Duties. This season Ajax already lost points at the easy hurdles, meaning the small team beaters PSV are still on top.

Vitesse the big game team this season, but a bad spell around New Year put them behind.

Twente already dropped out it seems, but still only 6 points behind and a new coach.

Utrecht has a far better season than last, but no serious candidate for the title despite being still pretty close.

Leaguetable 1st of March, 2013
Code:
1 PSV 24 16 2 6 50 78 - 27
2 Ajax 24 13 9 2 48 54 - 25
3 Feyenoord 24 14 5 5 47 47 - 32
4 Vitesse 24 13 6 5 45 48 - 31
5 FC Twente 24 12 8 4 44 40 - 22
6 FC Utrecht 24 12 6 6 42 38 - 27

Just thinking that PSV have 1 crap game for every 4 games...
They've lost 6 of 24 thus far p

Still have to say it'll be PSV considering this should be their year. Ajax are slipping but have been more consistent. Twente have a new manager coming in to give them a push though and the Feyenoord fans seem to think they've already won the title, so it's still tight.

Our next 5 games should be a walk in the park.

If we get a minimum of 13 points from those games then i can't see us losing the title.

Nah, there were some good years as well. Twente scoring 85 points with us just close by and in the mid 00's PSV and Ajax also had solid titles which were accompanied by good results in Europe.

Now we simply had big failures in Europe. Many KO's before the tournament even started and the teams that were in couldn't even beat an IKEA or Gipsy side.

Wally Poverty price? Did you just translate armoede to English or is this an expression in English as well

PSV will win the title.

It's chivu with his Dutchisms.

You don't have a term for it in English

I was wondering also about the use of "poverty" in this thread. Perhaps if someone could explain the concept of a 'poverty title', I might find a more appropriate English word. Does it mean the team that wins the title will lose their star players (loss = poverty) to the sharks of Europe (Real Madrid, Arsenal, etc.)?

Okay, I think that I know what it means.

In Minnesota, they have divided the schools into class AA and class A for ice hockey. Large schools play in AA and small schools in A. But, sometimes, they deride the class A champion as the "Junior Varsity Champion" because it implies the A level is not up to the standard of the AA level. (At any given school, the best players play varsity [first team] and the not-so-good play junior varsity [second team]).

So, the winner of the Dutch Eredivisie might be called the "Junior Varsity Champion" since the Dutch league is not considered on the same standard or level with the English Premier League, or Spanish League or the German Bundesliga, etc.

Poverty means that there isnt any team that has enough quality to be the rightfull winner of the league. Meaning that we have a lot of teams going for the title but none that have any extra quality.

Okay, I see. That makes sense. Thanks!

In English, we might say the "reluctant champion" as if no team really wanted the title badly enough to play consistently.

Its not so much relactant nor inconsistent, more a lack of quality to perform good enough to be a rightfull champion.

Teak, it just means nobody in the league is really worthy of the title of 'champion' because nobody A) plays really good football and B) in doing so is significantly better than everyone else. But after 34 rounds, someone will be placed 1st in the rankings because it's unavoidable. So we call them the Poverty Champion. Because they didn't win it so much as all the other idiots lost it by being even worse.

Whichever club wins the league this year won't win it because they were good, they'll win it because they were less awful than everyone else. That's what poverty champion means.
