(Former) AZ players elsewhere

All national coaches of teams competing in the 2010 FIFA World Cup have to present their final squad list before June 1st. Several AZ players are nominated to take part in football's biggest tournament.

NETHERLANDS
Lens, Mendes da Silva and Schaars have been invited for an internship by national coach Bert van marwijk. The AZ players are part of a group of (candidate) internationals who have ended their club season and have no other commitments. The newcomers will have a chance to prove themselves during two internships (10-11 May and 13-14 May). Oranje start their World Cup preparations in Seefeld on 19 May.

Games:
Netherlands – Mexico (26 May, Freiburg)
Netherlands – Ghana (1 June, Rotterdam)
Netherlands – Hongarije (5 June, Amsterdam)
WC: Netherlands – Denemarken (14 June, Johannesburg)

MEXICO
Moreno has joined the national squad of Mexico on Tuesday 4 May. The defender is part of the preliminary selection of coach Javier Aguirre.

Games:
Mexico – Ecuador (7 May, New York)
Mexico – Senegal (10 May, Chicago)
Mexico – Angola (13 May, Houston)
Mexico – Chili (16 May, Mexico City)
England – Mexico (24 May, Londen)
Netherlands– Mexico (26 May, Freiburg)
Italy – Mexico (3 June, Brussel)
WC: South Africa – Mexico (11 June, Johannesburg)

AUSTRALIA
Brett Holman has been included in the preliminary selection of Pim Verbeek.

Games:
Australia – New-Zealand (24 May, Melbourne)
Australia – Denmark (1 June, Roodepoort)
Australia – USA (5 June, Roodepoort)
WC: Germany - Australia (14 June, Durban)

ARGENTINA
Romero has been recovering from a minor injury in his homeland and hopes to be part of Diego Maradona's preliminary selection that he has yet to announce. Maradona has earlier hinted Romero stands a good chance of definitive inclusion.

Games:
Argentina – Canada (24 May, Buenos Aires)
WC: Argentina – Nigeria (12 June, Johannesburg)

DENMARK
Simon Poulsen has been rewarded with call-up by Morten Olsen after his steady performances as AZ left back this season.

Games:
Denmark – Senegal (27 May, Aalborg)
Australia – Denmark (1 June, Roodepoort)
South Afrika – Denmark (5 June, Johannesburg)
WC: Netherlands – Denmark (14 June, Johannesburg)

OTHER
Moussa Dembélé, Maarten Martens and Gill Swerts have been selected for a friendly game against Bulgary in Brussels on 19 May. Ragnar Klavan will feature in Estonia's two friendly games against Finland on 21 May and Croatia on 26 May (both games in Tallinn. Neither the Belgians nor the Estonians managed to qualify for the World Cup.
Romero is virtually in, he might even be the starter. Same goes for Holman. Schaars has a small chance of being included, as does Lens. I can't see Mendes landing an invitation. Moreno has a lot of competition, it's going to be a very exciting few weeks for him!

Mendes got the boot - no World Cup for him.

Moreno played a full 90 minutes with Mexico last week as they beat Angola in a friendly (1-0), it's looking good for Héctor

Holman has the perpetual "he's useless but Pim always selects him" cloud hovering over him, he'll make it, along with the usual derisive "Holman's got naked photos of Verbeek if he doesn't," when the inevitable happens.

Yeah Holman dosent get great reviews here but he will be the back up for Timmy Cahill at the WC surely.

Schaars has a decent shout imo but i doubt Lens would make it. Mendes is sueless ... a waste of time inviting him to the training camp.

Moreno dosent have that much competition does he? I mean Maza is useless, same with Slacido but he'll play LB. Magallon isnt too convincing also. Romero a certainty to start for the Argies though.

Holman is such a tricky player. Where does Cahill play these days?

I'd prefer it if Schaars stayed home and Lens went but I doubt it's gonna happen. Bert is very conservative.

Moreno has some competition from defenders who play in the Mexican league (damned if I know their names). Apparently defense is to Mexicans what offense is to the Dutch

Romero will at least keep our flag high.

Cahill normally plays just in behind the main striker (normally Kennedy). So our midfield trio normally looks like this:

Culina - Grella

Cahill

Holman should be a straight up replacement for Cahill when he comes off the bench or if Timmy is injured etc. Due to our lack of strikers there talk that either Cahill or Kewell may start as our lone striker (they both have played that role for the socceroos before).

No strikers? That's tough. Slim chance for Holman there.

Well strikers are Kennedy who can do nothing but header the ball, Scott McDonald who hasnt scored for the Socceroos and well Ruka who has only played in the Belgium League and is not proven.

There is massive media speculation that either Kewell (most probably) or Cahill will start up front, much to my dislike. In games where one of them has started up front Australia have been even more cautious than normal as both players have a tendency to drop to much into midfield. If Cahill does get the nod up front then the likelihood of Holman getting a start will be massive seeing as Bresciano might also take up a wide midfield role.

Our guys not doing brilliantly in the eyes of the public. People seem particularly worried about defense given the low percentages for Boulahrouz and Vlaar. Schaars seems obsolete indeed - there are too many (better) competitors. Lens, however, would be a valuable addition.

Sergio is in - he's been included in Diego Maradona's final squad selection. The other two goalies are: Mariano Andujar (Catania) and Diego Pozo (Colon). Whom I've never heard of. Good luck Sergio!

Yeah I wouldn't mind if Lens stays, but worthless Kuyt will probably prevent that

Did you see his rant on AD.nl about his talk with Van Persie? Hilarious stuff. "Robin thinks I'm a very valuable part of the team, you know?!?"

An honour to have had him in our ranks and a joy to see him score goals in EPL, CL finals (although I know..) and for the NT. Dirk Kuijt, indeed, mas que un jugador!

On topic, hell yeah Lens should have made it!
