First week - stat attack!

Heracles Almelo – AZ

On Saturday, 1 August, AZ travel to Heracles Almelo to start their quest of defending their 2008/2009 Eredivisie title. The Dutch Champions could have a challenge on their hands as Heracles was the last club to frustrate a Dutch Champion in the opening match round of the season.

> In August 2005, PSV managed only a 1-1 draw in Almelo in their first match of the 2005/2006 season.
> On only four occasions, the defending Dutch Champions suffered a defeat in the opening round of the season.
> The last time this happened was at the start of the 2000/2001 season, when De Graafschap beat PSV 2-0.

Interesting! Two additions...

Longest unbeaten run in opening games: PSV & Heerenveen
(both in 2000 last loss, De Graafschap-PSV 2-0, FC Utrecht - Heerenveen 2-0).
Longest run without a win in opening games: Sparta
(no victory since 1987 when they've beaten FC Utrecht 6-2 :embarass: )

On a personal note, VVV couldn't win their last eight opening matches, Utrecht their last five...

Guess AZ will quite easily beat Heracles, they impressed in the Supercup.

What?!?!
I'm just going to check what result I've put for Sparta in the predictions league.
EDIT: Ahh, I'll be okay I think, 23 seasons without an opening day win, sorry Sparta

Hehe, 7 draws and 11 losses since then, they played four season at the second level if I'm not mistaken...

With Twente at home they normally won't have much chance, but Twente are perhaps a bit tired after their European adventure in Lissabon, with that perhaps they'll rest some players for the return... so there's a bit of hope for them on Saturday.

Hmm, have I been too hasty writing off Sparta?
In the last ten games against Twente at the Castle, Sparta have won 4, drawn 4 (so of course losing 2). One of those defeats was last season when Twente won 2-1.
Given the European adventure Twente are engaged in it could be a draw.
But that would continue Sparta's first day blues!

Well, another nice fact; during their last nineteen home games versus Twente, Sparta scored at least once. Last time they didn't score was back in 1986 when they lost 0-1.

Some more facts from VI...

- Heerenveen is thirteen consecutive home matches unbeaten, last defeat on 29 october 2008 versus Vitesse (0-2)
- PSV is thirteen consecutive home matches unbeaten versus VVV-Venlo, last defeat was back in 1958 (0-1)
- Groningen has just won two out of nineteen home matches versus Ajax. Back in 2006 and 2009, out of the rest Groningen lost 15 times and drew 2 times.
- Feyenoord hasn't beaten NEC at home for three consecutive years. In 2007 they drew, in 2008 and 2009 NEC won in de Kuip. Mario Been, Feyenoord's current coach, was NEC's coach those three years...
- Willem II couldn't score in five of their last eight home games.
- Heracles has won just one game out of their last nine home games...
- During their last seven meetings in The Hague, ADO has beaten NAC just once...

Some more...
Longest period without...
- a win: NEC (10 games)
- a home win: NEC (7 games)
- an away win: ADO (7 games)
- a defeat: PSV (7 games ago)
- a home defeat: Heerenveen (13 games ago)
- an away defeat: PSV, Sparta and Groningen (3 games ago)
- a draw: NAC & VVV-Venlo (10 games ago)
- a goal scored: NAC (2 games ago)
- a goal against: FC Groningen (4 games)
- a clean sheet: NAC (7 games ago)
- a 0-0: Heerenveen (67 matches ago)

Huh, how do you mean? What's Lady Fate? (my english isn't that good hehe)

They haven't drawn for ten games in a row...

btw, Heracles won only one out of their last nine at home... if you can't beat them tomorrow...

I meant they don't seem to be able to play for a draw like the more stable clubs. If everything goes well, they win. If it doesn't, they lose. Completely at the mercy of fate (overgeleverd aan het lot).

You don't have to win to frustrate the other team.

Hehe that's true...

If I'm not mistaken, within a few hours the first ever Eredivisie game played in July will kick off I think...
