2006 Doha Asian Games
DOHA: The draw for the Doha Asian Games men’s and women’s football tournaments was held on Thursday in the Qatari capital.
There are 30 men’s teams in the fray, with 22 qualifying directly for the second round. The eight remaining teams which didn’t participate in the last Asian Games have been divided into two groups of four, and play in the first round. The winner of each group joins the 22 in the second round and the Competition proceeds with 24 teams (six groups of four).
The women’s tournament sees nine teams compete in two groups of four and five each.
Two-time defending champions Iran have been drawn in the easy Group D with India, Hong Kong and Maldives while hosts Qatar find themselves in what is a tough group A with their West Asian rivals UAE and Central Asian powerhouse Uzbekistan. The fourth team in this group will be the winner of the Group A first round qualifying.
Iran have won the Asian Games title the most times in 1974, 1990, 1998 and 2002.
