The Official Asian Cup 2007 Thread

25 National Associations to vie for AFC Asian Cup 2007

KUALA LUMPUR: Twenty-five National Associations have submitted their entry for the AFC Asian Cup 2007. Only 24 teams though will make the draw for the qualification rounds of the AFC Asian Cup 2007.

Bangladesh and Pakistan, being the two lowest-ranked teams among the 25 National Associations, will compete in a home and away play-off match to decide the 24th participating team in the qualification round.

In a draw that was held on Friday at the AFC House, Bangladesh will host the first leg before traveling to play in Pakistan. Both matches are scheduled for November 2005.

Meanwhile, the draw for the qualification round will be held on 4th January 2006. The 24 teams will be divided into six groups of four. Teams will play on an home-away basis starting from 28 February 2006.

The top two in each group will qualify for the final round of the Asian Cup which will be hosted by Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. The four hosts have automatic qualification.

List of 25 participating National Associations in the Qualifications round:
Level 1: Japan, China, Iran, Bahrain, Uzbakistan and Jordan
Level 2: Iraq, Kuwait, South Korea, Oman, Saudi Arabia and Qatar
Level 3: Australia, UAE, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen and Singapore
Level 4: Palestine, India, Sri Lanka, Honk Kong, Taiwan and (Pakistan or Bangladesh)

-----------------------

I think this is the worst Asian Cup ever:

1. the Asian Cup should be every 4 yaers not 3 years
2. 4 hosts this is insane
3. WTF South Korea and Saudi Arabia level 2?? Australia level 3? Bahrain, Uzbakistan and Jordan level 1 ??
4. 25 teams ?? we are 45 in Asia, where the hell the rest of the teams, they have the right to play.

They're so desperate to have the ASEAN region host it, they've totally papered over all the cracks. We're heading for disaster unless things change.

They did not apply or they applied too late.

North Korea warned, Australia in

The head of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has told North Korea to get its act together if wants to participate in future Asian competitions.

The communist country were kicked out of the qualifying competition for the 2007 Asian Cup after they missed the deadline for applications.

"Either they want to take part in the Asian Cup or they don't," Mohamed Bin Hammam told Reuters on Wednesday.

"It was a difficult decision (to expel North Korea) but Asian countries must place greater importance on the big tournaments."

Their expulsion from Asian Cup qualifying is the latest blow to North Korea. FIFA forced them to play a home World Cup qualifier against Japan in neutral Bangkok in June after angry fans rioted after an earlier 2-0 defeat by Iran in Pyongyang.

Some felt the punishment was too harsh.

"It's very unfortunate they are not (in the Asian Cup)," AFC competitions director Carlo Nohra said. "After the last World Cup we expected them to come out of their shell but we are fearful FIFA would send them back."

Former Soviet republics Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan were also left out after applying late for the Asian Cup qualifiers, which begin in February.

Among the teams taking part in the qualifiers are Asian newcomers Australia.

The 2007 Asian Cup is being jointly hosted by Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.

Asian Cup qualifier postponed
Oct 27, 2005
FootballAsia.com

KUALA LUMPUR - The Asian Football Confederation announced Friday that the playoff between Pakistan and Bangladesh for a spot in the Asian Cup 2007 qualifiers has been postponed following the devastating earthquake that hit Pakistan earlier this month.

The two sides, the lowest-ranked teams among the 25 National Associations that entered the qualifying rounds for the Asian Cup, were to have played a two-leg playoff to decide the 24th team to participate in next year’s qualification rounds, which will feature six groups of four teams.

The first leg of the playoff had been scheduled for November 11 with the return leg on November 18.

The AFC Competitions Committee is expected to announce the new dates for the match next month.

The top two teams in each of the six qualification groups will advance to the Asian Cup finals in 2007, where they will join the four co-hosts – Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam.

We all know these draws are rigged anyway, but can you see the AFC honestly running the risk of either Japan or Korea missing out? I don't.
