Israeli Premier League 2013/2014

Next weekend is scheduled to start the new Israeli Ligat Ha´Al season. With some polemic issues as IFA and Toto still haven´t reached an agreement over broadcasts but apparently everything is set for the start.

Who do you guys believe will win the title? Who will fight for Europe or be the surprise of the season? What type of Beitar will we find? Hapoel Beer Sheva could fight for the top?

We should have a very interesting season. Give your thoughts.

If on 1 April Ronaldinho would sign with Maccabi Petah Tikva , I know which club will win the title!

Beating Hapoel in the derbies was so sweet, as usual Plus, seeing Abutbal and Toama losing their temper while Zahavi simply leading Maccabi to cruise in victory.

For me one of the most emblematic moments and where guess there was a general feeling that the title was certainly going to Maccabi was the Bnei Yehuda 2-3 Maccabi Tel Aviv thriller. Moshiko Lugassi´s torpedo from outside the box on the top corner at the 50th minute! While Bnei Yehuda had equalized at the injury time already as well. That game was really emotional and united the team even more.

I think Israel is too small for 14 clubs. Too many clubs without really an large fan basis. Isn't it?

In Austria and Switzerland, 2 countries similar to Israel, they have first division 10 teams and second division 10 teams. Playing 4x against each other a year, so you have 36 matches.

Wouldn't this be better for Israel? Because playing for less than 1000 fans doesn't make sense and give bad reputation for the league.

In Belgium we have 16 teams (with more than 11.000.000 inhabitants) and many fans also would like to reduce the league to 12-14 clubs or something .

Certainly it would be more suitable indeed. There were some years that it had a 12 team league.

The teams you listed certainly are the ones who have more fan base and would be an attractive league without a doubt. You have still some traditional sides like Hapoel Jerusalem and Hapoel Kfar Saba who are in Liga Leumit and and Liga Alef, 2nd tier and 3rd tier respectively who have a considerable fan base for Israeli standards.

Kiryat Shmona hasn´t much fans since they city is small (around 25k people) and maybe one or other support in the north of the country. But they are organized and deservedly are on top flight.

It has been an eternal question and generated debates in Israel regarding the number of teams, some argue that a bigger number of teams would give more exposure to the smaller teams and more Israeli players would receive chance to play higher level football on the other hand the level of football would reduce a bit since the gap between the stronger sides and the smaller sides is big.

We should try to keep a balance. Guess a 12 team league would be good.

So now it was officially set that the league will start this weekend after a lot of disagreements between, clubs, IFA and broadcasting rights.

At the end the games will be held as scheduled. The first game of the season will be champions Maccabi Tel Aviv visiting Hapoel Akko, while we should have entertaining matches with Beitar Jerusalem hosting Hapoel Beer Sheva at Ramat Gan (Teddy was not ready for the match due to the Maccabiah Games) with a lot of expectations on both sides. On Sunday Maccabi Haifa against Kiryat Shmona should be attractive.

Some interesting data here before the season kickoff.

The approximate budget of the Israeli Premier League teams.

The values are in New Israeli Shekel

Maccabi Tel Aviv 90 million

Maccabi Haifa 55 million

Hapoel Tel Aviv 42 million

Hapoel Beer Sheva 29 million

Beitar Jerusalem 23 million

SC Ashdod 16 million

Hapoel Haifa 16 million

Bnei Yehuda 14 million

Bnei Sakhnin 14 million

Hapoel Raanana 14 million

Hapoel Akko 11.5 million

Ramat HaSharon 10 million

Didn´t manage to find Ironi Kiryat Shmona´s budget and neither Maccabi Petah Tikva. But apparently Kiryat Shmona will have the highest budget of their history. So they must more or less close to Beitar Jerusalem while Maccabi Petah Tikva is likely to be near in the range as most clubs in between 14-16 million.
