Israeli Premier League 2011/2012

We are nearly two weeks away from the beginning of Ligat HaŽAl 2011/2012 and I have decided to anticipate this thread due to all the fuss that has taken these days regarding budgets and financial situation of certain clubs.

As we have discussed briefly at Beitar forum, the club from the capital is suffering a really serious financial difficulty as previous owner Arkady Gaydamak stopped investing in the club and new owners Adam Levin and Dan Adler have simply ran off the map. The team was oblied to sell Hen Azriel to Maccabi Haifa rapidly in order to achieve the minimum necessary budget for Ligat HaŽAl or else the club would be in serious risk to relegate or suffer severe point deduction.

Hapoel Petah Tikva on the other hand didnŽt have the same luck as Beitar. The Israeli Football Association decided to relegate the traditional Malabas club to Leumit since they didnŽt achieve the minumum budget. The club is trying to see if they could push this deadline for more couple of days in order to collect or borrow money in order to "save their season". Hapoel Petah Tikva finished in 14th place last season playing the playoff match against Hapoel Kfar Saba (they won 5-1 on aggregate and remained in Ligat HaŽAl) that was informed by IFA as their natural substitutes to take place in the league. Kfar Saba received a 24 hour deadline in order to confirm the necessary budget.
Meanwhile, Hapoel Ashkelon owner Prosper Azagi has gone out to the media saying his team has the funds and that he is ready for a Ligat HaŽAl action if Kfar Saba fails to meet the demands.

Now speaking on football itself, we will have a very interesting season ahead of us as firstly the kizuz was officially abolished.

We expect to see a very intense fight for the title as Maccabi Tel Aviv has appeared to leveled a bit with Haifa and Hapoel this season since both the latter clubs have lost important players from last season and have failed to replace them with the same quality.
Other clubs such as Bnei Yehuda, Hapoel Haifa and Kiriat Shmona promise to surprise and could be the ones fighting for European spots next season.

While relegation will be interesting as well since three clubs are expected to play in Leumit next season therefore reducing the league number to 14 for next season onwards.

What do guys think about the rule change and what are your expectations for the season ahead. Who will win the title?

Well regarding tradition in Israeli football they shouldn`t for all the history they represent in the country especially Hapoel Petah Tikva who is the fifth team with most league titles in Israel.

It is sad day, but eversince late 90Žs when the team still played for European spots and even for the title it has been bad administrated and the team became a normal midtable team, only a shadow of what it was in the past. The result and consequence is what happened today, and there were warnings in the past as the team was relegated three years ago only to return the following season. Guess the lesson wasn`t learned.

Meanwhile Maccabi Petah Tikva with much less history and tradition, with less fan appeal has always managed to be at the top and playing in Europe.

Tough choice, I'll go with Maccabi Tel Aviv since their squad is pretty much intact which means full of star players. But you can never count out Haifa or Hapoel regarless how they look now. They have one big advantage though which is the manager. Dror Kashtan and Elisha Levy are some of the best in Israel.

Hapoel.

Hope I won't be right again this year though and Ivanir&Maccabi suprise me, but I hold Kashtan and Damari/Tamuz in too high regard.. they're gonna do it this year.

In a normal situation I would certainly place Beitar in this poll, but with the current status the club is going through it is unthinkable to see them fighting for the title, it doesnŽt mean they arenŽt a big club.

I've gone back and forth on this a lot, but I voted for Maccabi Tel Aviv. All 3 teams listed here have the talent and pedigree to win the league, but Maccabi has the best depth and I think that puts them over the top. With all these guys coming up from the youth ranks and playing well, they can rotate their players and keep them fresh, and they can cope well with injuries. Haifa and Hapoel have great players, but we've already seen with Haifa in particular how an injury or suspension can change the way the team performs. Imagine if Hapoel had to go an extended period of time without Damari or Tamuz- who would step up? Lala's an ok bench option, but they aren't deep at striker or most other positions.

The one caveat I'd make is that Haifa could buy reinforcements who change the picture, especially if they make the Champions League. Itzik Cohen is a nice buy at an important time, and Tamir Cohen would be a huge deal. So don't count them or Hapoel out.

Ligat HaŽAl had its kickoff today with Maccabi Haifa in great style beating Netanya at the "Kufsa" 4-1 all goals being scored by Wiam Amasha who apparently has been looking as the new talisman of the greens.

Hapoel Acco beat Bnei yehuda at home 2-0 while Kiriat Shmona seems to be wanting to continue their last year run winning today at Kiriat Eliezer against Hapoel Haifa 1-0.

Rishon Lezion registered their first win after returning from Leumit with a good 4-2 over Sakhnin.

Two games have been postponed: Hapoel Beer Sheva - Beitar Jerusalem, SC Ashdod - Ramat HaSharon due the recent incidents in the south.

Amasha put up an amazing performance. The good thing is that I think he will stay at Haifa for a long time, and this give them stability up front.

Amasha won't be able to play abroad unless he gets an Israeli passport, because hes a Druze from the Golan.

I don't think he wants to play with Syria, afterall he has represented Israel at youth level. It's just his community would give him alot of trouble if he gets Israeli passport.
