Haifa: Weakest team in CL history :)

Beitar fans will never forget.... good riddance i say...

Soccer / Champions League / Haifa could go down in history as group stage's weakest team
By Haaretz Correspondent and Staff , By Uzi Dann

Zero points and zero goals after four rounds of the Champions League group stage. It's a dubious feat that has been accomplished only once before - by Belgian side Anderlecht in 2005-06 - before Maccabi Haifa embarked on its current underwhelming campaign.

Haifa lost 1-0 to Juventus in Ramat Gan on Tuesday to remain without a point, or even a goal, in Group A.

Anderlecht, for the sake of comparison, lost its fifth-round match as well, but prevailed in a meaningless final match over Spain's Real Betis 1-0.

There were other teams that finished their group-stage play without points - Fenerbahce, Spartak Moscow, Anderlecht, Rapid Vienna, Levski Sofia and Dynamo Kiev all did so in this decade alone - but all managed to score at least once, and all had done so by the fourth round.

One other team was held goalless in group play, Spain's La Coruna in 2004-05, but it walked away with two points, having drawn twice, including at Liverpool's imposing Anfield Stadium.

If Haifa's dismal fortunes persist and it fails to score even a single goal in its remaining three matches, it will earn the shameful distinction of being the only team in Champions League history to be held without a goal and without a point.

Should that happen, Haifa's Champions run this season will be remembered not only for being goalless, but absolutely and quite literally pointless.

The Italian press was unimpressed with Juventus' performance Tuesday, and, predictably, with that of its Israeli hosts.

Tuttosport, a sports daily printed in Juve's home of Turin, heaped accolades on Mauro Camoranesi (who knocked in what proved to be the winner) and Gianluigi Buffon (a living legend between the posts) but had little praise for the rest of the men on the roster of the club affectionately known as the Old Lady.

As for Haifa, it lambasted the hapless Levantines as a "team that looked tired from the burden of the Champions League."

Italy's flagship sports daily, La Gazzetta dello Sport, was kinder, reserving praise for midfielder Diego and Juve's other South Americans, and even for Haifa keeper Nir Davidovitch.

Haifa, Gazzetta reported, put on the performance of a "small but stubborn club.

They are not the weakest team. Maybe statistics could prove otherwise, but the truth is Haifa was caught in a very tough group. Ok, maybe not scoring a goal is a bit sad, but the team is not playing badly.

This last game at Ramat Gan against Juventus was the weakest so far and the previous games Haifa were really unlucky not to get a goal or even some points.

A few thoughts....

No one is giving credit to Haifa's qualification wins over Salzburg. Salzburg is undefeated in Europa League play (They have beaten Villareal, Lazio and Levski Sofia 2x)

Even though Haifa's finishing might not be of champions league quality, Haifa has been competative with 3 superior teams, and have been denied by some great goaltending. With some luck hopefully we will get a goal.

At worst, Bordeaux has already clinched a spot in the knockout round, and if they beat Juventus at home in round 5 (or hold them to a 0-0 draw), they will have clinched first place in the group and absolutely nothing to play for in round 6 (so hopefully they will field a 2nd tier side)

This team is young. The young players should be able to build on this experience. And if we can sign 1 or 2 better foreigners in the winter transfer period, we should have a better run in the CL group stages next year.

Im not saying Haifa is weak or not

All i am is conversing the article I have on hand.
They put a young team because they know that Israeli team and the Israeli mentality is to usually bring in a team, watch it succeed and then lose players throughout the cucumber season to european sides because of the success they had in Europe.

Come next year and you got a new team who may not understand each other.
This season was an actual test to try something new....

Haifa goal is to use this team for 8 years if not more...

I agree with your thoughts. The statistics don´t translate exactly the reality. Haifa is a young team like you said and they have potential to reach higher standards. They really were unlucky to get a very tough group.
