Itzhak Shum the new coach! Amsalem retires!

So Beitar has finally announced their new coach. Itzhak Shum the one who led the club to a double two seasons ago and left in a tough way with the fans after not resisting the pressure in a humiliating 5-0 defeat in the hands of Wisla Krakow in the CL qualifiers.
Shum substitutes Reuven Atar who finshed third place last season and won the Cup.

Beitar captain and fullback David Amsalem has annnounced his retirement at the age of 38. The now former player who was loved and respected by the fans played almost during all his career in Jerusalem and was appointed the task of assistant coach.

Amsalem is one these few players that nowadays really identifies himself with the club. He is a Beitar fan and always ahad a good relationship with the fans even when the club was on crisis. His commitment, leadership and discrete ways always put him on high regards at Beitar even not being the most brilliant of players.

That is why they give a position at the club.

Regarding Shum, he is a good coach and unfortunately he had a bad moment in the defeat to Wisla ( which dealing with Beitar was enough for a big internal crisis and led the pressure to dismiss him). Shum has a good curricullum and the first coach to put an Israeli team in the Champions League group stage. Let´s not forget that a season before he won the double with Beitar and couple of years before a double with Panathinaikos after a domain from bitter rivals Olympiakos.

What i don´t understand is why Reuven Atar was left out. He had a decent season with the club and all the jobs he had until now he managed very well. Maybe Shum is better now for his experience, but i don´t see any logic in bringing the coach you dimissed for the one you replaced it.

I dont understand that as well.

I wish Atar all the best and i think he will do good with another team or possibly go to another leauge..

Newly promoted teams like Raanana and Beer Sheva can definately use his notch.

Shum has always been the best coach for Israel. And when Kashtan leaves the Israeli NT..i think its time to put Shum in his position..the guy is the best. Just never gotten a chance...

Atar is a promising coach. Sooner or later he will find himself in a big club again.

Itzhak Shum gave an interview talking about his impressions for this season. The veteran coach rates Beitar as a serious candidate for the title and that it would be a mistake from other opponents to underestimate Beitar. Maybe because of the turbulent summer, Shum won´t have his team 100% fit for the first round, but definitely with the maintainence of most of the squad and a more quiet summer regarding expectations, could prove to worth at the end for Beitar.

When asked about Itzhaki and Barychyan possible transfers, Shum resumed saying: "They are Beitar players and they will remain that way. Only a big offer from Europe takes them from Beitar Jerusalem".

Good news for Beitar fans.

Shum is a good coach indeed. He had the bad result against Wisla that made his situation bad with the fans that had high expectations in European competition.
But he is experienced and it won´t surprise me if Beitar wins the title.

I watched today's toto cup game, and two of Beitar's players really stood out for me, Azriel, he had a goal and an assist, and Idan vered, it looks like he has really improved alot. I wouldn't be surprised if Beitar wins the league, there just seems to be something off with Haifa, but I can't put my finger on it.

Well both Azriel and Vered are good youth products of Beitar and are part of Israel´s U-21 team. This is why Beitar could be considered one of the favourites, despite having all this turmoil they kept most of the players and in the last years have produced many youth talents for the NT.

I agree a bit with kappa-le, I'm not the biggest fan of Katan,Haifa's game seems to revolve through him, if they got rid of him I think they could play maybe a different style that would benefit them.

Yes, it is an intresting point. It is going the same way Maccabi Tel Aviv had with Avi Nimni. The fans wouldn´t let the coach substitute him even if he was playing bad.
In Katan`s case i still think he is helping Haifa. Today against Aktobe he pulled the comeback.
