Retirements

Two players with great history have retired from football last week.
Goalkeeper Shavit Elimelech quits at the age of 37 and his last club was Hapoel Petah Tikva.
Elimelech had his great moments playing for Hapoel Tel Aviv and having an important role in the teams successful Uefa Cup run in 2001-2002 season. He also won one Israeli league title in 1999-2000 and three Israeli cups. Also had 14 caps for the Israeli NT

Alon Harazi played most of his career at Maccabi Haifa being part of the historic team to qualify for the Champions League group stage in 2002-2003 including great victories over Manchester United and Olympiakos. At international level Harazi collected 88 appearances being the second most capped player only behind Arik Benado. With the NT he participated in most of the historic wins, including a 3-2 over France in Paris and a 5-0 win over Austria in Tel Aviv.

Thank you for everything!

Elimelech was a real great for Israeli soccer.

He led Hapoel Tel Aviv to doubles in 1999 and was the GK for the team in the run for the UEFA cup which he made amazing stops against Chelsea, Lokomotiv, Bestikas and the so forth.....

He was one of the main players for Israel in the National team and I was hoping that after the 2001-2002 season he and Nir would have gotten some offers to play abroad. Some offers were made....but nothing that was lucrative.

I really respect him......

Elimelech was the type of player good in club level, but in NTcouldn´t repeat his good performances. Of course he got a transition period after the Sharf and Nielsen era where the likes of Berkovic, Revivo, Banin etc...left and he got the toughest moment.

Harazi was solid. Both in club and NT. Second top capped player of all time for the NT and many titles, especially for Maccabi Haifa. Other than that a good character.

Holtzman is the same example as mentioned in my last post regarding Elimelech, good at club level, but couldn´t repeat the performance in the NT. Holtzman was top scorer of the league two times if i am not mistaken and among the 10 top Israeli league goalscorers of all time. Guess he was about 30 goals away from Oded Machnes, the number 2. Remembering Alon Mizrahi is the first.

1992-2006: Israel had a good amount of Arsenal in their pocket for a GK. Today im worried...
after Awatt and Davidovitch, who btw - is 32 (born 1976 and has atleast 10 years of will in his pocket...) are the only decent GK who are Israeli that we have.

Who can replace Awatt/Davidovitch pact? Shekel and Almadon?
Need not apply!

Gil Shohat, plays in Bonner in 3rd Bundesliga. He is a distant relative of mine and he played in the Maccabiah games for Germany. Who knows he is the future GK of our NT

Well who knows in 4 or 5 years we could see a good talent coming up from youth teams. Aouate is nearly 32, but for goalkeepers he still has some time to go.

What we need to improve is our keeping coaches. Improve the methods.

Veteran defender Asi Domb has announced that he will retire on the end of the season. The 36 year old who currently plays for Hapoel Ramat Gan didn´t have too much opportunities to contribute this season because of an achilles tendon injury which he will have to take surgery.

Domb started his career in Maccabi Netanya and without a doubt his best in his career was his period with Hapoel Tel Aviv where he collected a league title and a State Cup, plus he was part of a solid defense alongside Shimon Guershon in the epic Hapoel Uefa Cup campaign.

And Domb was announced as one of the scouts of Hapoel Tel Aviv, club in which he made history playing in the squad that won the league title in 99/00 and the epic Uefa Cup run in 2001 making a good pair with Shimon Guershon.

After the news of SHimon Guershon retiring, IFA has announced that Alon Harazi (the second most capped player for the Israeli NT with 89 games, only behind Arik Benado with 95) will receive a honour and official retirement prize of the NT before kickoff against Croatia.

Well deserved, besides the great player he was, he is a great person which we sorely miss in the world of football.

Now I ask you guys, why only now some two years he has retired?

Veteran Maccabi Petah Tikva defender Murad Megamedov will announce today if he will retire or if he will continue one more season with the club. The decision wilkl take place with the Luzonim, Zuaretz and coach Freddy David.
Megamedov arrived in Israel in 1996 and has played for all this period for Maccabi Petah Tikva being without a doubt one of the most iconic players of the teams history. He has participated in the teams campaigns in which they finished second place and in Uefa Cup Group Stage (now Europa League) which included a previous 5-2 historic win over Partizan in Belgrade.
One of the good and loyal foreign players to have played in Israel. Sad to see him retire, he is a legend in Israeli football.

Yeah, Megamedov has officially announced he will retire next season and the number 4 jersey will be retired from the club.
There will be a special game for the player at the end of the season to make his retirement official.

Thank Megamedov for everything.

Good luck on your next steps

He was a genuine foreigner. He never flopped on the team and never asked for much. Made his mark in the Israeli League and would always be remembered for that.

Most foreigners use Israel as a helipad for Europe. This guy not only stayed in Israel, but played in a mid level team and done greats for them.

Thank you for an amazing run Megamedov had...the King of Azerbijian!

Omri Afek has announced his retirement from football. The 32 year old winger has faced an injury long season and has opted not to continue his career.

Afek played for Hapoel Tel Aviv and was part of the team that had a great Uefa Cup run, Racing Santander, Salamanca, Beitar Jerusalem, Maccabi Haifa and Bnei Yehuda. Afek also had some caps for the Israeli NT being a constant present in Avram Grant`s campaigns including a goal against France.

Thank you Omri!

Idan Tal has announced that he will retire at the end of the season. The talented central midfielder has currently 36 years old and came this season back to his boyhood club Hapoel Jerusalem to end his career.
Tal, had 69 caps and 6 goals for the Israeli NT being the 11th player with most appearances for Israel. His last game for the NT was in Israel´s travel to Wembley for the Euro 2008 qualifiers when it lost 3-0.

Tal played during his career at: Hapoel Jerusalem, Maccabi Petah Tikva, Hapoel Tel Aviv, Merida (Spain), Everton (England), Rayo Vallecano (Spain), Maccabi Haifa, Bolton (England), Beitar Jerusalem.

Obviously he is far from his prime right now, but he was a very good player, with great technique and skill, one of the best Israel central midfielders I have seen play. It will be a great loss for Israeli football when he retires in May.
