Cyprus referee at the Tel Aviv derby!!

Yes, that is correct. After so many mistakes and blunders from our referees, the IFA has taken a drastic move and invited the main referee of neighbouring island Cyprus, to officiate the big Tel Aviv derby in two week time. In this final stages of the league some mistakes have helped some teams and since Hapoel is already fighting for the title and Maccabi will do everything to stop it, the game promises to be very hot atmosphere.

Thoughts about this? Good or bad?

Its like putting a band-aid on a bigger problem. The problems in Israeli Football are a microcosm of Israel as whole.

It can help to distract from the main issue for just a short time, to avoid heated discussions about a non-neutral referee should any controversial decision occur in the game. Of course the real sickness is a lack of good referees (trust me, in many countries, Israel is not alone with that problem) and appointing a foreign referee to avoid heated debates is just curing the symptom for one game. I'd say it's OK as in: it gives the IFA more time to tackle the real problem and meanwhile avoid the debate to escallate in the final stages of the league. It is OK as a once-off, to have more time to tackle the real problem, but importing foreign referees is no good long-term solution. It's OK as long as it's just a once-off.

Knowing the Cypriot league (unlike the Greek one) is not exactly known for crowded stadiums and fanatic atmosphere, the Cypriot referee will probably be more intimidated by the fans than the players will be

Well i hoped that IFA explained to the trio the will come from Cyprus the importance of this game, not only beacause one of the teams is fighting for the title, but also the historical meaning of this derby, the most tough to handle in Israel and certainly with the biggest rivalry.

Like crackedpleasures said, this won´t cure and solve the problem, but it is a way to show and call attention to the referees that they should work harder to avoid mistakes. And of course IFA to work harder in giving workshops for the referees.
