Former national team star Eyal Berkovic was convicted yesterday of assault and threatening his son's soccer coach. The judge in the Kfar Sava Magistrate's Court sentenced Berkovic to 100 hours of community service and ordered him to pay coach Danny Etzioni NIS 2,000. Under the law, he must first get an expert opinion clearing him to do community service instead of jail time.
The punishment is part of a plea bargain the state prosecution worked out with Berkovic.
According to the indictment, in October 2007 Berkovic assaulted Etzioni, who was his son's youth team coach at Maccabi Herzliya. As Etzioni was getting on the team bus, Berkovic told him, "I'll screw you, I'll destroy you .... I'll follow you your whole career. You're taking revenge on the boy because of me."
At one stage during the proceeding, Etzioni sought to retract his complaint, but the state prosecution refused. "I take no joy in Berkovic's conviction," the prosecutor said yesterday. "I hope it will be an educational message to all parents not to interfere with the work of coaches in all branches of sport, not only soccer."
Maccabi Herzliya chairman Ariel Shayman - who pushed Etzioni to file the complaint - also expressed sorrow over the conviction. But he added: "Everyone must understand a coach's life is not forfeit, and parents can't just threaten and attack coaches because next time it will end in jail time."
