Which signees will make an instant impact? (@ Va Tech that is)

Safety Nick Dew

It's unlikely Nick Dew will push for playing time this year at safety, particularly due to the fact he hasn't played the position much even in high school as he saw more time at end and linebacker. The one thing Dew has going for him is his outstanding closing speed which can be especially useful on special teams in both kick and punt defense. That is an area Dew has shown tremendous ability at as well with a handful of blocked kicks in his high school career. Whether that justifies pulling the redshirt is up for debate and will come down to how other specialists are playing as well.

Offensive Tackle Laurence Gibson

A tremendously gifted and athletic offensive tackle, Laurence Gibson has the chance for significant time upon his arrival. Tech loses one of the starting offensive tackles in Ed Wang and while it's pretty unlikely that Gibson would start, it's not far-fetched to see him jump into the two-deep quickly. That is especially possible with his arrival last month and opportunity to move up the depth chart over the course of spring practice. Gibson has the frame and quickness already, he just needs to go out and prove it. I'd personally be shocked if he isn't seeing significant time in a backup role this season.

Defensive End Zack McCray

Losing both defensive ends, Jason Worilds and Nekos Brown in the offseason has dramatically opened up the position for a player like Zack McCray. The Hokies have some depth at defensive end, but nothing is proven and if McCray can impress upon his arrival this summer he will certainly have a chance to see the field. At best he would seem a likely pick in the two-deep. McCray could see time on punt and kick defense due to his quickness and size, but if that is the only area he would see the field I expect the Hokies will stick with a redshirt year.

Safety Theron Norman

Theron Norman already enrolled this spring after a semester at Hargrave Military Academy. Despite minor injuries during his semester there, Norman has a tremendous opportunity at the safety spot with the departure of Kam Chancellor and Dorian Porch. With the spring to develop and earn his place in the depth chart, it should be expected that Norman pushes his way into the two-deep. He's a hitter and has a knack for making plays. It wouldn't be unreasonable to see Norman apart of the special teams units as well. Barring an injury I'd expect Norman to see the field in some capacity.

Defensive Tackle DeAntre Rhodes

The defensive tackle position for the Hokies is pretty slim with Cordarrow Thompson and Demetrius Taylor gone. Tech does have John Graves, Antoine Hopkins and a slew of prospects that haven't proven anything yet. The real question is whether Rhodes can get to campus as he's still waiting on grades. If he does, I'd expect to see him in the mix amongst the two-deep and potentially seeing significant playing time as the year goes on. Rhodes is extremely physical and aggressive at the point of attack and the Hokies are looking for impact players in the middle.

Defensive End Justin Taylor

There are a number of darkhorse prospects that could see the field in 2010. I think there is definitely a chance one will emerge to see playing time on special teams and I'm not ruling out Chase Williams or Tahrick Peak as my other potential candidates. My pick though amongst the remaining group would be Justin Taylor. The only way Taylor will see the field as a true freshman would be on special teams. He is just too raw at the defensive end position to make an immediate impact there. However, he's proven at least on the high school level to be an outstanding special teams player and that's something Virginia Tech will take a long hard look at due to his impressive speed and good pursuit skills. Whether it's enough to see the field, particularly since he'll need time to develop and bulk up into a true defensive end is up for debate and I'd lean to the more likely fact he'll redshirt.

Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium on Dec 30

By RONALD BLUM, AP Sports Writer

NEW YORK (AP)—The first Pinstripe Bowl will be played at Yankee Stadium on Dec. 30 and will be televised by ESPN.

The game will include the No. 3 team in the Big East and the No. 6 school in the Big 12, excluding Bowl Championship Series participants.

“I think no matter what the sport, every kid who grows up wants to play at Yankee Stadium,” Yankees president Randy Levine said Tuesday.

If the bowl had been played last season, the Yankees said Rutgers and Texas A&M would have been the participants. If one of the conferences cannot fill its bowl slot, Notre Dame could be considered.

ESPN agreed to a six-year contract to televise the first bowl in the Northeast since the 1981 Garden State Bowl at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. This will be the first bowl game at Yankee Stadium since Nebraska defeated Miami 36-34 at the old ballpark on Dec. 15, 1962.

“It does give us instant credibility and instant recognition,” Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner said.

New Era Cap Co. Inc., known primarily as the supplier of major league caps, agreed to a four-year deal to be the title sponsor in its most notable venture outside baseball.

Big East commissioner John Marinatto didn’t think the bowl schedule was too crowded.

“Bowls, like everything else, are a function of the marketplace,” he said.

Future games will be played no earlier than Christmas and no later than New Year’s Day. The first football game at the new $1.5 billion stadium will be Nov. 20, when Notre Dame plays Army.

Swarbrick: Expansion could force ND into move

By RALPH D. RUSSO, AP College Football Writer

NEW YORK (AP)—Notre Dame wants to remain independent in football, but that might not matter if the Big Ten and Pac-10 decide to expand and create sweeping changes to major college sports.

“Our preference is clear,” Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said Tuesday. “I believe we’re at a point right now where changes could be relatively small or they could be seismic.”

Swarbrick said it will be up to him and university president Rev. John Jenkins to “evaluate the landscape” if realignment happens.

The Big Ten announced in December it will explore options for expansion in the next 12 to 18 months. Last month, the Pac-10 also made it known that it would be considering adding schools.

Notre Dame has had a non-football Big East membership since 1995.

Notre Dame to the Big Ten has been a constant source of speculation for years. Its South Bend, Ind., campus is located in the heart of Big Ten country and the Irish already have established rivalries with Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue.

The Fighting Irish rejected an offer to become the league’s 12th member in 1999 and since then Notre Dame has gone about reaffirming and re-embracing it independent status in football.

Swarbrick has picked up where predecessor Kevin White left off, scheduling offsite and neutral site games around the country, a move that harkens back to Notre Dame’s barnstorming golden age.

Last season, the Irish played Washington State in San Antonio, Texas. Next season, they’ll play Army at Yankee Stadium and on Monday it was announced they would play Maryland at FedEx Field, the home of the Washington Redskins, in 2011.

New coach Brian Kelly said he likes the fact that Notre Dame plays games from coast to coast.

“It’s great when you look at the schedule and see games all over; at Yankee Stadium, at USC,” he said.

Notre Dame’s long and lucrative relationship with NBC, which airs all Irish home games, has helped the storied program flourish on its own, despite not winning a national title since 1988. Notre Dame’s current deal with NBC ends after the 2010 season and was reportedly worth $9 million per year. Another five-year deal is set to begin in 2011.

Notre Dame is also guaranteed to receive money from the BCS every year, no matter how the Irish play.

Of the 120 major college football teams, only Notre Dame, Army and Navy are not in a one of 11 conferences.

The Big Ten has given no hints about what schools it might want to add or how many, but speculation has been rampant. Texas and Missouri from the Big 12 and Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Syracuse from the Big East are names that have been thrown around by media and fans.

But if Notre Dame ever had a change of heart, the Big Ten would no doubt welcome the Irish.

Since the Pac-10 announced it was interested in expanding—most likely adding two teams to reach the minimum 12 needed to hold a football championship game a la the SEC, Big 12 and ACC—the speculation ramped up again. Colorado from the Big 12 and Utah, BYU and San Diego State from the Mountain West are some of the teams that have been mentioned as possible Pac-10 targets.

“I’ve been around this business for 29 years,” Swarbrick said, “and this is as unstable as I’ve ever seen it.”

So what could lead Notre Dame to consider giving up its independence?

“What if realignment impacts the shape of the BCS?” Swarbrick said.

“The Big East has been a great conference for us,” he said. “If there is a fundamental change to the Big East, what does that do?”

Unknowns aside—and there are plenty more—if Swarbrick had his way, he’d choose the status quo.

“We’re trying like hell to maintain our football independence,” Swarbrick said. “I think it’s good for college football and it’s good for Notre Dame.”

Oregon QB Masoli suspended for next season

By ANNE M. PETERSON, AP Sports Writer
Mar 12, 2010

Oregon quarterback Jeremiah Masoli was suspended Friday for the upcoming season by coach Chip Kelly after pleading guilty to second-degree burglary in the theft of a pair of laptops and a guitar from a campus fraternity.

Masoli, who had been mentioned as a potential Heisman candidate, will remain on scholarship with the Ducks.

“He does have a redshirt season available to him if he chooses to do that,” Kelly said.

Kelly announced the suspension just hours after Masoli appeared in Lane County Circuit Court to answer to the burglary charge.

Kelly, who has come under fire for some of his disciplinary decisions, also meted out punishment for running back LaMichael James and placekicker Rob Beard.

James was suspended for the season opener after he pleaded guilty early Friday to a misdemeanor harassment charge stemming from an altercation with his former girlfriend.

Beard was also suspended for the opener Sept. 4 at home against New Mexico after pleading guilty last week to a misdemeanor harassment charge for his role in a street fight that left him seriously injured.

“I am extremely disappointed anytime any of our players fall short of our expectations that have been clearly outlined for them in advance on numerous occasions, and this is especially true regarding their roles within the community,” Kelly said. “Their accountability for their actions is paramount and any tainting of the reputation of the University of Oregon and this football program will not be tolerated.”

Masoli pleaded guilty as part of a deal that reduced his charge from a felony to a misdemeanor. Former Ducks receiver Garrett Embry pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of second-degree burglary as well.

Both were sentenced to 12 months of probation and 140 hours of community service. Together they must also pay $5,000 restitution.

In the same courtroom hours earlier, James entered his plea and was sentenced to 10 days in jail and 24 months of probation. He reported to jail on Friday afternoon but was quickly released and instead put on electronic surveillance for the duration of his sentence.

Deputy District Attorney Alex Gardner had said earlier that it was unlikely James would serve jail time because of overcrowding, and because his offense was relatively minor and he was considered low-risk.

James, who set a Pac-10 freshman record with more than 1,500 yards rushing last season, originally faced five misdemeanor charges, including strangulation, harassment and assault. All but one harassment charge were dropped.

In a statement that was included in court documents related to the case, James apologized to the victim, a former girlfriend. She claimed he grabbed her neck and pushed her to the ground during an argument on Feb. 15.

“I hope to put this matter behind me now and learn from it. I have made a mistake and accept the consequences,” the statement said. “I look forward to demonstrating to my University, to my team and to the community that I am a better man than recent events suggest.”

James rushed for 1,546 yards last season as a freshman, the ninth-highest total in the nation. He had seven consecutive 100-yard games before Ohio State limited him to 70 in Oregon’s 26-17 loss in the Rose Bowl.

Masoli threw for 2,147 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. He also rushed for 668 yards and 13 touchdowns.

The two helped lead Oregon to a remarkable comeback from a season-opening loss to Boise State. The Ducks won their first Pac-10 title since 2001 and earned their first trip to the Rose Bowl since 1995.

Kelly’s action was the latest twist to the Ducks’ offseason of disarray.

Beard was placed on probation after entering his plea.

Linebacker Kiko Alonso pleaded not guilty to drunken driving charges in Eugene Municipal Court last week. Kelly suspended Alonso for the 2010 season upon learning of the arrest.

Defensive end Matt Simms was dismissed by Kelly after he was cited on assault charges last month. Simms pleaded guilty to physical harassment for striking a man he thought had beaten Beard.

Receiver Jamere Holland was dismissed from the team after posting vulgar comments and criticizing Kelly on the Facebook social networking site.

Kelly, who made his debut as a head coach last season, was questioned after he brought back running back LeGarrette Blount early from a season-long suspension.

Blount was suspended for punching a Boise State defensive end following the season-opening loss. He missed eight games before he was reinstated for meeting certain academic and behavioral criteria set down by Kelly.

University president Richard Lariviere issued a statement late Friday in support of Kelly’s actions.

“I am confident that Coach Kelly has carefully and fairly considered the disciplinary actions he is imposing,” Lariviere said. “I know that he understands the high expectations of Oregon’s faculty, students and fans.”

Leavitt sues USF over firing

TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—Former University of South Florida football coach Jim Leavitt has sued the university over his firing.

Leavitt, who was fired in January over claims that he grabbed and player by the throat and struck him in the face, filed the complaint Monday against the USF board of trustees and athletic foundation.

Leavitt denied the accusations and claims in the lawsuit that the university’s investigation was flawed and his reputation has been damaged. The action seeks to recover some of the $9.5 million left on his seven-year contract.

A spokeswoman said the school stands by its decision and investigation.

East Carolina coach Skip Holtz was hired to replace Leavitt.

NCAA rule hits Auburn’s Tiger Prowl

Apr 30, 2010

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP)—The en-masse spring recruiting trips by Auburn and other schools have come to an end.

The NCAA passed a rule Thursday allowing a university to send only two coaches to a high school on the same day during an evaluation period, when assistants are allowed one visit to assess a prospect’s athletic ability and a second to evaluate academics. NCAA spokeswoman Stacey Osburn said Friday it is effective immediately and originated with the Big East Conference.

Groups of Auburn assistants have done the so-called “Tiger Prowl” to state and area high schools in limousines the past two springs. Auburn has also used a bus for fan events during the jaunts this spring, though not for campus visits.

The NCAA didn’t mention Auburn directly but notes multiple coaches often visit schools “in limousines and extravagant buses” and that the visits are as much to make a splash as to evaluate prospects.

“Many institutions are unnecessarily expending resources in order to have multiple assistant coaches attend these evaluations as a result of the perceived recruiting benefit,” the NCAA said. “By permitting only two football coaches per institution to visit a prospective student-athlete’s school on any given evaluation day, it would preclude institutions from sending a large number of assistant coaches to a school just for perception purposes.”

The attention-getting technique apparently helped last season; the Tigers pulled in one of the nation’s top recruiting classes.

On Thursday morning, before the ruling was issued, Auburn coach Gene Chizik made a point to separate “Tiger Prowl” from the recruiting visits, saying that refers to the fan events not the trips to high schools.

Seantrel Henderson, considered by many to be the nation’s No. 1 football recruit for 2010, will attend Miami, the New York Times reports.

Henderson signed a letter of intent with USC in March after receiving assurances from Trojans coach Lane Kiffin that NCAA sanctions stemming from the Reggie Bush case wouldn’t be serious.

But the NCAA punished USC with a two-year bowl ban and significant scholarship reductions in June, prompting the Trojans to release Henderson from his letter of intent on Tuesday.

A 6-8, 340-pound left tackle from Cretin-Derham Hall High School in St. Paul, Minn., Henderson was recruited by big-name programs from across the country. He joins a Miami class that was rated in the nation’s top 16 by both Rivals.com and Scout.com.

Henderson’s father told the Times his son would report to Miami on Aug. 3, and that he is academically eligible for the 2010 season.

Nick Saban Hates On LeBron For Pulling a Saban

Nick Saban jumps on the LeBron James criticism bandwagon

Talk about the pot calling the kettle a little tanned.

Former Miami Dolphins' head coach and universally hated person, Nick Saban, is the latest to jump on the Miami Heat Hater bandwagon, with comments he made recently at a news conference in Alabama.

Why Saban would be discussing the Heat's offseason transactions when he was supposed to be talking Bama football is anyone's guess. but what might be more troubling or offensive is that Saban stressed the importance of trust and respect.

"The way (LeBron James) managed what he did just speaks volumes about who he is and whether he is a team guy - not because he left Cleveland, but the way he did," Saban said, according to Bleacher Report. "That's not the kind of trust and respect you'd like to have in a team organization."

Oh, you mean like lying to an entire city and organization repeatedly before running out of town with millions of unearned dollars in hand?

We wonder what that says about you, Nick?

With all the haters chiming in on the Heat's new All-Star line up, we could start an All-Star team of our own.

Charles Barkley, Michael Jordan and now Nick Satan, er, Saban.

In a way, Saban is a fine example for LeBron to follow. He left a pretty tough situation in the Dolphins for the chance to win championships in college.
