Wideout?

Guess I'm a bit retarded, but what is so special about the the term 'wideout'?

It used to be that those players were known as wide receivers or simply as receivers, but these days everybody from the analysts on ESPN to the sportswriters is calling them wideouts.

Is this now the more correct term somehow? Just a passing fad? Or was everybody calling them wideouts already 20 years ago and I just didn't realize it?

Timmuh!

Um, o.k. Agree with you. Now they're differenting wide receivers between those who sit in the slot versus those who are "wide-out." So if you're a cowboy's fan, Irvin and Harper were considered wide-outs. Anyone who's a receiver between playing in between them on the line of scrimmage is considered a slot.

Don't know what the deal is with all the semantics but that's my internalization of it.
