USF Loses 3rd Assistant Coach In 6 Days

By BRETT McMURPHY

[email protected]

University of South Florida secondary coach Troy Douglas resigned from USF today to take a similar position at the University of North Carolina.

Douglas is the third USF assistant to leave the program in the past six days. Former offensive coordinator Greg Gregory went to South Alabama, a program that begins play this season, and defensive coordinator Wally Burnham left to become defensive coordinator at Big 12 doormat Iowa State.

Douglas, 43, had been at USF for three seasons, highlighted by the 2007 season when he coached first-round NFL draft pick Mike Jenkins and All-Big East cornerback Trae Williams.

Douglas was a key recruiter for the Bulls in the Jacksonville area. He is reunited at UNC with defensive coordinator Everett Withers, who was a college teammate of Douglas' at Appalachian State.

In 2007, Withers was defensive coordinator at Minnesota and offered Douglas a position with the Gophers, but Douglas decided to remain at USF when coach Jim Leavitt promised to increase his salary. Douglas made $130,000 at USF in 2007-08, making him the fifth-highest paid of USF's nine assistants.

In 2007, Douglas also turned down an offer to become running backs coach at Middle Tennessee.

Douglas' departure leaves the Bulls with only two defensive coaches – both who just finished their first seasons at USF: defensive ends coach Kevin Patrick and defensive line coach John Hendrick. Patrick also was at USF from 1996-98 before leaving coaching for 10 years.

USF begins spring practice on March 9.

Former USF football player found, three still missing

TAMPA, Fla.

—One of four missing boaters was found Monday former USF walk-on defensive end Nick Schuyler clinging to the 21-foot Everglades Center Console fishing boat the players took out Saturday morning.

Schuyler was on the boat with former USF player Will Bleakley and former Buccaneers players Marquis Cooper and Corey Smith. The other three men have not been found.

Taken to Tampa General Hospital, Schuyler is in serious condition but able to speak, the St. Petersburg Times reported in the afternoon.

The group departed at 6:30 a.m. Saturday from Seminole Boat Ramp in Clearwater Pass, and the Coast Guard received a call early Sunday morning that the men had not returned.

The Coast Guard searched more than 16,000 miles of Gulf Coast waters and found the overturned boat. Schuyler told the Coast Guard it was anchored 35 miles offshore when it flipped.

Crystal Lake High School's, where Bleakley graduated, athletics director Tony Stukes said that the school was monitoring the situation closely.

"He's in everyone's minds and prayers," he said.

U. South Florida digests saga of football players lost at sea

By Candace Braun, The Oracle

TAMPA, Fla.—As each minute passed, media reports told the Bleakleys that the chances of finding their son, Will, were worsening.

The water in the Gulf of Mexico was about 60 degrees. The wind whipped over the swelling waves at speeds up to 30 miles per hour. Hypothermia was likely setting in, they said.

As the hours stretched into days, family and friends had to weigh these reports against the fervent hope that they would see the former University of South Florida player, son and friend again.

Though the Coast Guard ended its search for Will and his two friends Tuesday evening, Will's mom, Betty Bleakley, said she and her husband considered continuing on their own, just as the family of another of the missing boaters Oakland Raider and former Buccaneer Marquis Cooper did by hiring three private pilots.

Those plans changed Wednesday morning, however, when she spoke to Will's former teammate the lone person rescued during the Coast Guard's three-day, 20,000-mile sweep of the gulf.

It was then, she said, that she realized her son wasn't coming home.

As former USF player Nick Schuyler sat in a hospital bed, being treated for the moderate hypothermia he got from spending almost two full days clinging to the overturned boat, he told Bleakley about what happened during the last 24 hours before he was rescued.

"It was very painful to hear," she said. "I knew at that point that we did not need to keep searching."

Bleakley said she didn't want to discuss their conversation, but said earlier reports that some of the players had given up hope and let themselves be taken away by the thrashing waves were untrue.

"They fought like crazy to stay alive," she said. "These men did not give up the will to live. Their bodies succumbed to the elements."

Schuyler, Bleakley, Cooper and Detriot Lions player hand former Tampa Bay Buccaneer&mdashCorey Smith had gone fishing at about 6:30 Saturday morning. When they did not return that night, a relative called authorities. The Coast Guard began its search around 1 a.m. Sunday.

Dr. Mark Rumbak, USF professor and pulmonary critical care physician, said in a news conference Wednesday that one of the major reasons the four men stayed alive for as long as they did was because of their rigorous training as athletes. He treated Schuyler who has progressed from fair to good condition and is expected to be released from Tampa General Hospital within the next few days shortly after he was hospitalized.

"This guy is in very, very, very, very good physical condition," Rumbak said of Schuyler, adding that the same could have been said for his three friends. "It's what got [Schuyler] through this."

USF tight end Andrew Ketchel, who played football with Schuyler and Bleakley, said he believes all of the training the sport requires goes beyond making a person physically tough.

"Mental toughness is something you learn through football that you're able to adapt to the rest of your life," he said. "[The four players'] ability to last so long under such horrible conditions is a testament to that."

Despite the players' strength, Ketchel said that when the Coast Guard found Schuyler clinging to the boat Monday afternoon, he worried it meant the others wouldn't be found.

"I'm an angler&mdashI've been out there. I know what kind of conditions they're facing," he said. "I tried to stay optimistic and have hope, but I had a gut feeling, down in my soul, that they didn't make it."

Over the past four days, the Coast Guard searched and the media reported every announcement it made. But for many family members and friends, it was hard to avoid a feeling of helplessness as they waited for news.

"It was a really crazy situation because it's always in the back of your mind," said Grant Gregory, friend of Bleakley and former USF quarterback. "There's nothing we could do aside from call the people who are friends with him and care about him."

Throughout the week, many turned to local media outlets to find out the latest information about the search for the four friends.

Even when some of the information turned out to be false, Betty Bleakley felt some degree of gratitude&mdashlike when reports emerged that a person had been found in gulf, but later determined it to be a giant fish.

"That was a real boo-boo," she said. "It raised our hopes so much, but we needed that at the time."

Though the Bleakley family has ended its search, for many, returning to life as usual without Will will be a challenge.

"It's hard to cope with this when they haven't found the bodies," Gregory said. "You don't have closure."

Report: Improper anchoring caused boat accident

By CHRISTINE ARMARIO, Associated Press Writer
TAMPA, Fla. (AP)

—An agency investigating a deadly boating accident involving two NFL players and their friends in the Gulf of Mexico has concluded it was caused when the vessel was improperly anchored and the boat capsized after one of them tried to throttle forward to pry loose the anchor.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s investigation also cited carelessness and operator inexperience as contributing factors. The combination of errors came at the time a storm front was moving in, making conditions on the water very rough.

Oakland Raiders linebacker Marquis Cooper, free-agent NFL defensive lineman Corey Smith, and former University of South Florida players William Bleakley and Nick Schuyler departed from Clearwater Pass, Fla., early Feb. 28 to go offshore fishing for amberjack.

Schuyler, found clinging to the boat two days later, was the lone survivor. The other three men have not been found.

In an in-depth interview with the agency, Schuyler gave this account of the accident:

Early that morning, the men went more than 50 miles offshore in Cooper’s 21-foot vessel. It was loaded with two large coolers filled with ice, drinks, food and beer. All of the friends were dressed in warm clothes, sweat suits and jackets.

Around 5:30 p.m., they went to pull up the anchor and head back to port, but the anchor was stuck. Bleakley suggested they tie it to the transom and use the boat’s motor to pull it loose.

When Cooper tried to thrust the boat forward, the vessel became submerged and capsized, tossing the men overboard. All four tried uprighting the boat by standing on one side of the overturned vessel. When that didn’t work, Bleakley swam underneath and was able to retrieve three life vests, a large cooler and a portable, cushion-type flotation device.

Bleakley, who Schuyler has credited with saving his life, used the makeshift flotation device, which has been described previously as a cushion. The other three wore the vests.

The men appear to have tried everything in their power to rescue themselves: Schuyler told the agency they tried retrieving and using flares, but they were wet, agency Investigator Jim Manson said. They got their cell phones, which were in plastic baggies, but there was no signal.

They knew how many hours were passing because Schuyler had a watch with a light on and was able to keep track of the time. He said that around 5:30 a.m. the next day, Cooper became unresponsive. Schuyler and Bleakley tried to revive him without success.

Cooper’s flotation device was removed and Bleakley put it on. The Oakland Raiders linebacker then became separated from the boat.

About an hour later, Smith started to show “possible extreme symptoms of hypothermia.” He removed his flotation device and also became separated from the boat.

The two college teammates were the only ones left. They hung on together for about 24 hours, until Bleakley grew weak and removed his life vest as well.

Schuyler said that his friend appeared to die as he was holding onto him. He let his friend go and Bleakley drifted away.

Manson said moving the anchor line to the stern, or back of the boat, contributed to the vessel’s instability and flooding when they tried to free it. He described it as a mistake that probably happens every day, but one that a more experienced boater would be aware of and could handle.

Manson recommended cutting the line if boaters are not able to easily free their anchor. The agency advises boaters to take a boating safety course and leave a detailed float plan with friends or family.

Cooper, the boat’s owner, had more than 100 hours of boating experience but no formal education, and had been drinking, according to the report.

“Overall, it’s just a mistake in anchoring,” Manson said.

The Coast Guard released its records on the accident last week. According to the agency, Schuyler told them the boat capsized after their anchor got caught in a reef.

The accuracy of that account was somewhat unclear because Schuyler was suffering from hypothermia and spoke to them shortly after he was pulled from the boat. His doctor said he probably could have only lived another five to 10 hours.

The Coast Guard called off its search after three days of scouring 24,000 miles of ocean.

When the University of South Florida started to build its program from scratch in the mid-1990s, coach Jim Leavitt wondered if he'd have to sit over a dunk tank to sell tickets.

Bulls' Taylor out 8-10 weeks

ESPN.com

South Florida running back Jamar Taylor has a knee injury that should sideline him for 8 to 10 weeks, the school announced Tuesday.

Taylor's injury will not require surgery.

The injury to Taylor is especially tough for the Bulls because projected starting running back Mike Ford has been suspended for the first two games for violating team rules.

Tayor was injured during a scrimmage on Saturday.

South Florida Team Report Sep 9, 2009

USF coach Jim Levitt's ballot in the coaches' poll had a significant change from his preseason rankings.

After putting his team in the No. 25 slot going into the season, he dropped his Bulls after their lackluster performance in a 40-7 win over FCS foe Wofford.

"I think you have to come out of the gate a little better," Leavitt said in a report in the St. Petersburg Times. "I didn't think we came out good enough. I just can't justify it, and I want to be honest with my heart."

Leavitt explained that his team played about what he thought it would, but that some other teams he hadn't ranked—notably BYU, which beat Oklahoma, and Boise State, which beat Oregon—deserved the ranking more from their play.

The Bulls ALWAYS mess up on Nationally Televised games and when they get to be ranked ....

No. 8 Cincinnati loses QB, but beats No. 21 USF

TAMPA, Fla. (AP)—Tony Pike left the field clutching his non-throwing arm, and unbeaten Cincinnati’s high-powered, quick-strike offense kept rolling against South Florida.

The eighth-ranked Bearcats got two touchdown passes from their senior quarterback before he left in the third quarter with a sprained left wrist, then backup Zach Collaros ran 75 yards for the first of his two rushing TDs in a 34-17 victory over the 21st-ranked Bulls on Thursday night.
