UCF Knights Thread..Bravo Central Florida

UCF Team Report

Yahoo! Sports
Feb 6, 2009

A simple math equation helped UCF replenish its depleted secondary on signing day.

“They look at the depth charts and they see five guys graduating and five guys back,” head coach George O’Leary said. “We travel with nine (defensive backs) so, right away, they’re on the plane. I think that played a role if they did their homework.”

Defensive back Josh Robinson, a four-star Rivals.com prospect from Lauderhill, Fla., headlines the 24-member class and is one of seven early enrollees. The group ranks fifth in C-USA and includes eight three-star recruits, according to Rivals.com.

“Josh is an exceptional athlete who has fit right in, chemistry-wise,” O’Leary said. “He’s definitely a kid that I’m going to be anxious to see in the spring and see exactly where he can help us out.”

Robinson and fellow recruits Corey Ammons and Kemal Ishmael of Miami and Quincy McDuffie and Henry Wright of Orlando will compete to replace cornerbacks Joe Burnett and Johnell Neal and safeties Jason Venson and Sha’Reff Rashad.

One of the most intriguing signees is McDuffie, a 200-meter sprint champion who only played in one game in 2008 before suffering a back injury. He didn’t visit UCF and was rumored to be headed for Kansas State or Troy.

The recruiting class includes 16 players from Florida, five from Georgia one each from Alabama, Louisiana and Ohio.

TOP RECRUITS:

ATH Josh Robinson, Lauderhill, Fla.—The four-star Rivals.com prospect has already enrolled and should provide immediate help to a secondary that lost four starters. He was a cornerback and receiver in high school and played in the Dade-Broward All-Star game.

LB Jonathan Davis, Tucker, Ga.—Georgia’s Class 4A Defensive Player of the Year originally committed to South Carolina after recording 129 tackles and 12 tackles for loss and leading Tucker High to a state championship in 2008.

QB Nico Flores, North Miami Beach, Fla.—The three-star Rivals.com recruit (No. 31 at his position) chose UCF over Western Michigan at the 11th hour. He was an all-state selection in 2008 after completing 135-of-210 passes for 1,517 yards.

DT Deon Simon, Baton Rouge, La.—The 6-4, 260-pound Simon was a two-time team MVP at Glen Oaks High, where he was named all-district as a junior with 70 tackles and 10 sacks. He was also all-district in track and field in 2006-07.

Notes, Quotes

• Former QB Michael Greco, who started four games and played in eight last season, is making a position change to safety. He completed just 48.6 percent of his passes for 571 yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions in 2008.

• The 2009 non-conference schedule features home dates against Samford (Sept. 5), reigning MAC champion Buffalo (Sept. 26) and in-state foe Miami (Oct. 17) and a tough road test at Texas (Sept. 19).

• The Knights’ new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach is former CFL Coach of the Year Charlie Taaffe, who claimed that honor with the Montreal Alouettes in 1999 and 2000. He was also the head coach at The Citadel from 1987-96, a tenure highlighted by an 11-2 season in 1992.

Quote To Note: “I’m pretty much going to go where the athletes are, and I thought central Florida had some talent that we were looking for. I thought that we secured some talent.”—UCF head coach George O’Leary.

Strategy And Personnel

Spring Ahead: New offensive coordinator Charlie Taaffe inherits a unit that ranked 119th out of 119 FBS programs in total offense (229.5 yards per game) in 2008, so it’s no wonder that sweeping changes are coming. “Whether it’s running the ball, whether it’s option football, wide receiver screens, I want a diverse offense,” he said. “I want one that is flexible and I want one that has the ability to attack all areas of the field.” For a second straight spring, the quarterback job is wide open. Also look for the Knights to get away from last year’s ineffective running back-by-committee.

Pro Potential:

CB Joe Burnett—He played in the Texas vs. Nation All-Star game and has been invited to the NFL Scouting Combine. Last year, the All-American was the only player in the FBS to finish in the Top 20 in kickoff returns and punt returns. He earned first-team all-conference honors four straight years and ranks second in C-USA history with 16 picks.

SS Sha’reff Rashad—He led the Knights with five interceptions and finished second on the team with 10 pass breakups and 72 tackles (54 solo) in 2008. He led the team with 103 tackles in 2007. His 14 career interceptions are second only to Burnett at UCF.

FS Jason Venson—The four-year starter topped the team in tackles as a senior in 2008 (82) and as a red-shirt freshman in 2005 (85). He had two interceptions, broke up eight passes and recovered two fumbles last season.

Roster Report:

• QB Brian Taaffe, the son of new offensive coordinator Charlie Taaffe, has transferred from Fordham and will walk on with UCF. Another walk-on quarterback is transfer L.D. Crow from Stanford.

• RB Brandon Davis collapsed during an offseason conditioning workout in December and was hospitalized. Coupled with last year’s tragic death of receiver Ereck Plancher, the school has hired a consultant to conduct an independent investigation into the program’s training practices. It’s not clear whether Davis will return to the team this season.

UCF Team Report Sep 9, 2009

UCF is not ready to make a change at quarterback and sophomore Rob Calabrese will start at Southern Miss in Saturday's conference opener, head coach George O'Leary said.

Calabrese was pulled from last week's opener against Samford with the Knights trailing 7-0 in the second quarter. He had completed 3-of-7 passes for 28 yards and was sacked once. He was replaced by senior Brett Hodges, a Wake Forest transfer who was 10-of-17 for 129 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He directed four scoring drives and rallied the Knights (1-0) to a 28-24 victory.

Hodges will see action against the Golden Eagles (1-0), but Calabrese will be under center for the opening series.

UCF Team Report Nov 11, 2009

After getting torched for 470 yards and two touchdowns by Colt McCoy at Texas last weekend, UCF has to turn right around and face an even hotter gunslinger from the Lone Star State this Saturday as Houston's Case Keenum comes to Orlando.

The nation's most prolific passer has completed 84-of-114 passes for 1,081 yards and eight touchdowns in his last two games. That's right—his last two games.

"We've got to go back to the drawing board and just tighten a few things up," UCF junior linebacker Derrick Hallman told the Orlando Sentinel. "A lot of the times guys were right there [against the Longhorns], we just didn't make the play. So that's all. It isn't a big deal. Everybody makes mistakes."

UCF accepts St. Petersburg Bowl bid

By UCF Press Release

PrintORLANDO, Fla. (www.UCFAthletics.com) - The Knights are going bowling for the third time under head coach George O’Leary and won’t even have to get on an airplane as UCF announced on Tuesday that it has accepted an invitation to represent Conference USA in the St. Petersburg Bowl on Dec. 19 at Tropicana Field. The Knights will face a team from the BIG EAST Conference in the game.

Playing in the St. Petersburg Bowl is tremendously convenient for traveling UCF fans as the bowl game takes place on a Saturday night at 8 p.m., a short drive across I-4 for many Orlando-area Knight fans. The school has launched www.UCFBowl.com, the official bowl website of the Knights, where UCF fans and supporters can purchase tickets to the game and make travel plans through Anthony Travel.

“We are thrilled to have this opportunity to play so close to our fans in St. Petersburg,” said O’Leary. “Our senior class has done an excellent job leading this team. We’ve won our last six games in the conference and have eight wins on the season. It will be great to have a large fan base behind us as we go for our ninth victory against a quality team from the BIG EAST Conference. It is a great opportunity and one that I know our players wanted.”

“On behalf of our football program, athletics department and University, we couldn’t feel more privileged and excited at being selected to play in this year’s St. Petersburg Bowl versus a prominent BIG EAST opponent,” said UCF’s Director of Athletics Keith R. Tribble. “I’m proud of our team’s accomplishments this season, winning six straight Conference USA games and finishing 8-4, but our season is long from over and we have a great challenge ahead of us. St. Petersburg is an excellent bowl destination and I know our players and fans are in for a great experience.”

The bowl game will be a deserving cap to an 8-4 campaign during which UCF won six-straight league games en route to the sixth-best win total in school history. The Knights accomplished this feat behind the fourth-best rushing defense in the nation (trailing only Texas, Alabama and TCU) and an offense that is nearly 120 yards and 10 points per game better in 2009 than last fall. UCF finished its C-USA slate at 6-2, becoming just the second team in league history to finish a year 6-2 in C-USA play after starting 0-2.

The Knights previously played in the 2007 AutoZone Liberty Bowl as the C-USA champion, and against Nevada in the 2005 Sheraton Hawai’I Bowl.
