PITTSBURGH 3, MINNESOTA 1

FORT MYERS, Florida (Ticker)—Francisco Liriano tossed five impressive innings in his final spring start as the Minnesota Twins dropped a 3-1 decision to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Liriano, who missed all of last season after undergoing “Tommy John” surgery, yielded one run and three hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Liriano had an impressive rookie campaign before injuring his throwing shoulder in 2006 and is expected to take over as the club’s ace with Johan Santana being traded to the New York Mets this offseason.

Liriano’s biggest mistake came in the second inning, when Jose Bautista blasted a solo shot.

Pirates starter Phil Dumatrait pitched three scoreless frames, allowing just one hit and two walks with three strikeouts. Reliever Tyler Yates, acquired from the Atlanta Braves on Wednesday, logged a hitless fourth inning.

BALTIMORE 4, NY METS 3

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida (Ticker)—Orlando Hernandez pitched five solid innings in his second spring start as the New York Mets dropped a 4-3 decision to the Baltimore Orioles.

Tabbed as the Mets’ No. 5 starter, Hernandez allowed just one run and four hits with one walk and two strikeouts. In his previous start, the veteran was rocked for five runs and four hits in three innings against the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday.

Mike Pelfrey followed Hernandez and surrendered three run and six hits, raising his spring ERA to 8.14.

Baltimore starter Daniel Cabrera pitched five innings, allowing two runs, three hits and five walks.

Jose Reyes had a pair of hits for the Mets while Luke Scott finished with two hits for the Orioles.

CINCINNATI 6, TAMPA BAY 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker)—Carl Crawford had three hits and Matt Garza tossed five strong innings as the Tampa Bay Rays fell to the Cincinnati Reds, 6-3.

Batting .327 this spring, Crawford drove in a run, belted two doubles and stole a base.

Garza surrendered two unearned runs and four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Adam Dunn blasted a solo home run in the eighth frame for the Reds, who used eight different pitchers.

Cincinnati started closer Francisco Cordero, who gave up a run and two hits with two strikeouts over an inning.

Major League Baseball average ticket price rises 10.9 percent to $25.40

CHICAGO (AP)—

It will cost a lot more to root, root, root for the home team this year.

Major League Baseball’s average ticket price increased 10.9 percent this season to $25.40, the Team Marketing Report said Friday. That’s the steepest increase since a 12.9 rise in 2001.

The World Series champion Red Sox, playing in the major leagues’ smallest ballpark, have the highest average at $48.80, up 10.1 percent.

The Chicago Cubs, 100 years removed from their last World Series title, are second at $42.49, up 23.9 percent.

The Yankees, in their final season at Yankee Stadium, have the third-highest average ticket at $36.58, up a big league high 26.1 percent. The Yankees’ real average is much higher.

Jon Greenberg, TMR’s executive editor, said the team did not provide data and that he did not include the price of premium seating—which covers a large percentage of New York’s tickets. Yankees’ box seats near the infield had a list price of $250 this year.

The Mets, in their final season at Shea Stadium, have the fourth-highest average at $34.05, an increase of 20.5 percent. The Chicago White Sox are fifth at $30.28, up 5.2 percent.

Twelve teams raised their averages more than 10 percent, including six with average hikes of more than 20 percent.

NL West champion Arizona has the lowest average at $15.96, even with a 15.7 percent increase. Atlanta was 29th at $17.05 and Pittsburgh 28th at $17.07.

Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay ($17.23) were the only teams with no increase in their average.

TMR’s fan cost index went up 8.3 percent to $191.75. The figure includes two adult tickets at the average price, two child tickets at the average if available, two beers, four soft drinks, four hot dogs, parking, two programs and two adult caps. The index ranged from $320.71 at Fenway Park to $136.91 in Tampa Bay.

So guys, Now it's time for a post in here. I didn't want to open a new thread, but perhaps a "rules-thread" would have been good, but that would have made me look too uninformed.

Thing is, Baseball is one of the sports I always found attractive in a certain way. Just the mix of the way of playing it, the fan culture, the stadiums, etc. It's ot that we Europeans know a lot of Baseball, I'd rather say that we/I only know the very basic facts about it. You know some clubs, heard of innings, pitcher 'n' batter .. and that's it, oh and Joe DiMaggio through Mrs.Robinson. At university I've read about the famous Baseball grounds in Boston and Chicago and that got me interested in it again a bit more.
And from the start of this season now I can watch the MLB on NASN on TV and I thought about giving it a try.

A problem for me was always that I didn't understand it totally, which made a Baseball game a bit lengthy. On holiday last October I saw a game from the Dominican Republic league, and it was a bit difficult to get into it, if you know what I mean.

I got to know the rules a lot better now, so I don't sit in front of the TV wondering what's happening anymore. At least as long as no special rule comes into foce.

So I need your help at two other first questions.

First of all, what's up with the strange league schedule. The teams play 3-5 or 6 games in a row against each other. Why is there not a more mixed schedule like, for example, in the NHL. Is there a deeper reason behind it?

Another question is, what does it mean when I read bottom 6, top 6 or something like that when I look at a fixture. Strangely I saw that yesterday, but can't find it now.

Ok, there is one stupid rules question though. If the batter runs to the 2nd base after he has hit the ball does the other team have to throw the ball to the 2nd base or to the first base? I think 2nd, am I right? You see.. Europeans.

Well, and about teams... for no special reason, or just because of history and so on I somehow like BoSox, the Mets and the Cubs.

And then I want to renew Andrés Iniestas question: Which teams do you guys think to be the best this season? I really don't have a clue which players are good, nor do I know any specific player. I only remember the player Fukudome from the Baseball programme I saw yesterday.

So, get me into Baseball.

So, get me into Baseball.
1. Usually the days off are on Monday's and Thursday's, and the teams get 2-3 days off per month except for mid-July when they have their All-Star break. There is more focus on the division games in baseball, they play 19 games against each division rival, so for example, the Mets play 47% of their games against division teams.
- Personally, I like it, because it brings a lot of rivalries, but the northeast part of US is crazy about baseball, I can see places not so crazy about baseball not liking it as they don't see the Yankees, Red Sox much.
- Also, the National League and American League don't play each other except for 15 times which is called "Interleague Play". It's not like in NHL for example where the Eastern Conference teams play the Western Conference teams many times.
- The teams play 162 games a season

2. 'Top' means the away team is batting, 'bottom' means the home team is batting

3. The fielders have to throw to second base, but it is not a force out. Meaning, you have to tag the player with the ball. It is not a "force out" because the runner was not forced to run to second, when they happens you have to tage the player. If it is a "force out" meaning the player has to run to the base, all you have to do is throw to the base....hopefully this isn't confusing

4. The teams to look out for are the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, New York Mets, Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres. Some of the surprise teams could be the Cincinatti Reds, Cleveland Indians, Seattle Mariners, Toronto Blue Jays and Arizona Diamondbacks

There are many good players, the MVP's from last season were Alex Rodriguez (Yankees) and Jimmy Rollins (Phillies), but there are so many, really almost every team has one good player at least

if you have any more questions feel free to ask, or if you need me to clear some stuff up, as the 3rd question may not be clear

Yeah, ok.. I got that with the focus on the division games. That's really a good aspect of the US sports. I was only wondering that you play 3-4 times in a row against the same team. That's a bit strange for me.

about #3: I think I got it. I'm only confused a bit with some game scenes when the pitcher throws the ball for example to the first base, before he throws it to the batter, because the player from the opponent team is trying to get to the second base or what? Wouldn't the pitcher have to throw the ball directly to the second base in that case? I hope you understand what I mean. I saw that a few times during one of the Yankees-Blue Jays games.

So, are the players on the bases allowed to try to run to the next one although the batter didn't hit the ball?

So far I've seen a few games/highlightes from the top teams. The Padres looked good, so do the Red Sox. Their 5-0 win at Oakland was a bit boring for the first half, but then it was a good win as far as I can judge that. Also the Mets against the Marlins (13-0) was a nice game.

Oh, and what a funny occurrence. I've got to read "New York Trilogy" from Paul Auster for my English exam these days. The protagonist is a Mets fan and he talks with a barkeeper about a game. If I hadn't begun to get into the baseball rules on the day before I started to read the book I hadn't understood that paragraph.

And I found that one good here: "They were both Mets fans, and the hopelessness of that passion had created a bond between them."

PS: Thanks for reminding me of the beautiful town of Zadar, HS. I was there one year ago, nearly on the day.

Mets fans are kind of like the Torino fans in Turin, Man City fans in Manchester, 1860 Munich fans in Munich etc... they are usually passionate but outside of a few years, they have been a disaster and the Yankees overshadow them. If there was such thing as relegation in American sports, the Mets would be in the 4th division probably p

About question #3, yes, a player can try to steal a base, but it is not attempted often. At anytime during the at-bat the player can try to run to second base while the pitch in being thrown. The pitcher throws to first base to keep the runner close to prevent him from getting a good headstart.
Though, usually when a player tries to steal a base, the ball is already being thrown to the catcher, who tries to throw out the guy at second base. I hope this video answers the question, not the best video as MLB prevents their stuff on youtube

So see, the baserunner tries to steal 2nd base before the player hits the ball, but the catcher throws him out (the player on second base has to tag the player, as it isn't a force out). This all happens so fast as you can see!

here is another one (Mets player btw p ) but this time the player is safe
