Cup Predictions?

Simple: who do you think will win the Cup this year? Which teams will be in the final?

The obvious choice seems to be Detroit v Ottawa, as both pretty much dominating their conference. However, as we've seen the past couple of years, Detroit always seems to win the West but then fall to an early exit in the playoffs (see Calgary, Edmonton, Anaheim). Ottawa were known as playoff chokers, but then suddenly reached the final last year.

My guess;

San Jose v New York Rangers

The Sharks are a good franchise, and have been building a Cup contender very slowly over the past few years. They're currently 2nd in the West, and that's with Marleau and Cheechoo not producing at all. Look for those guys to pick up their form and San Jose will be even more dangerous. I was gonna go with Pittsburgh for the East, but with the goaltending they lack (Conklin has a good stretch now but he's not an elite goalie, Fleury has been terrible and Sabourin is a third string goalie) it will be hard for them to go deep. I think the Rangers will eventually get back on track, Lundqvist will pick up his play and guys like Jagr, Drury and Gomez are proven scorers in the playoffs.

Hard to go against the Sens in the East. Hard to think it won't be Detroit or Anaheim coming out of the West. Maybe the Stillman/Commodore duo will make Ottawa match up with Anaheim, but if its a repeat of last year, I see Nieds and Pronger shut it down again. Ottawa has a better chance against Detroit.

NB: From a complete homer perspective, I say this is the last year we're looking at Sens as the natural favourite in the East. Starting from next season, it is Penguin time .

APATHY: A word now fallen into disuse due to a lack of concern for it.
