Washington Redskins 2007
What have they shown us in Weeks 1 and 2? A completely different team than the 2006 Redskins. The defense has looked stingy, giving up only 25 points. The offense, meanwhile, has picked its spots and been explosive when needed. Jason Campbell has looked solid, the two-headed monster of Portis and Betts has made the Redskins the No. 4 rushing team in the NFL and Antwaan Randle El has awakened from his 18-month post-Super Bowl XL slumber.
Most Pleasant Surprise: The defense. LaRon Landry's game-sealing hit on Eagles wideout Kevin Curtis was more than just a pop, it was a statement. This ain't the same Redskins D from last year. London Fletcher has led the way, while Landry and Sean Taylor have looked impressive working together from the safety spots. Sure, the D has bent a bunch over the first two weeks. But it hasn't broken.
Potential Question Mark: The defense. Huh? But you just said . . . Well, I mean, it's only been two weeks. After all, aside from Landry, Fletcher and Fred Smoot, this is pretty much the same gang that made up one of the worst units in all of football last season. Let's see how they're doing come late October before breaking out the Steel Curtain and '85 Bears comparisons.
What's Up Ahead? A pretty manageable schedule, to be honest. Washington should be able to handle a beaten-up Giants team at home this weekend, and though Detroit and Green Bay are currently undefeated both are certainly beatable. Trips to New England, New York (Jets) and Dallas could be trouble spots over the next few months. But for the most part there are wins to be had.
Board This Bandwagon? Why not? Joe Gibbs and Al Saunders seem to have finally put it together on O and the defense — though it's still too early to offer a definitive judgment — has looked good. The schedule is rather favorable, everyone's amped up in the D.C. area, and Portis and Betts seem to be sharing the load just fine. Get on board. Now's as good a time as ever.
