Lions at Eagles

Jon Kitna was mocked for his prediction that the Detroit Lions would win at least 10 games this year. Two games into the season, Detroit is one-fifth of the way there.

The surprising Lions look to improve to 3-0 for the first time since 1980, while the disappointing Philadelphia Eagles try to avoid their first 0-3 start since 1999 when the teams meet at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday.
Kitna went out on a limb in the offseason and predicted that the Lions, who haven't won more than six games in a season since 2000, would reach double digits in victories this year. Kitna's statement was met with skepticism, but the 11th-year quarterback might have convinced some disbelievers with his performance last Sunday.

Kitna left the game with a concussion in the first half, but returned in time to help set up Jason Hanson's 37-yard field goal in overtime that lifted Detroit to a 20-17 win over Minnesota. He said the third concussion of his NFL career was the worst yet, but he felt fine when he re-entered the game midway through the fourth quarter.

"I've never felt anything like that, and for it to clear up and go right back to as normal as I can be, is nothing short of a miracle," Kitna said. "I just definitely feel the hand of God. That's all it was. You can't explain it."

Kitna has completed 49 of 69 passes for 534 yards, four touchdowns and three interceptions for Detroit, which leads the league with 682 passing yards. The Lions have an NFL-high four receivers with more than 100 yards each.

The strong passing attack has the Lions at 2-0 for the first time since 2004, when they finished 6-10.

"It feels good, but it's just a start," said offensive tackle Jeff Backus, who has been a part of each of Detroit's NFL-high 72 losses the past six-plus seasons. "We have to keep it going."

The Eagles, meanwhile, entered this season with a healthy Donovan McNabb and high expectations, but they're winless.

Philadelphia is hoping to turn around its 0-2 start the same way it did the last time it lost its first two games. The Eagles started the 2003 season with back-to-back defeats, but won 12 of their last 14 regular-season games and advanced to the NFC championship game. It was the third time in the Super Bowl era that Philadelphia made the playoffs after an 0-2 start. The Eagles also did it in 1978 and 1990.

"I think for the guys that were a part of that, there is a positive light in this situation, knowing that we've been through it," McNabb said. "But, still, you can't live in the past and you have to prepare for the future. And in this situation we only need to focus on Detroit."

Returning to the playoffs could be a stretch if McNabb doesn't return to form. The five-time Pro Bowler is healthy after undergoing major knee surgery last November, but he's completed just 54.4 percent of his passes for 424 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He missed several open receivers in Monday night's 20-12 loss to Washington.

"We didn't win the game, so I didn't play well. If I'm out there, I have to make plays," said McNabb, who lost for the sixth time in his last seven starts. "We have to find out what we're doing wrong and correct it."

McNabb's recent comments on HBO's "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" have only drawn more attention to his early struggles. In an interview broadcast on Tuesday, McNabb said black quarterbacks face greater scrutiny than their white counterparts. He also said black quarterbacks "have to do a little bit extra" because there are relatively few of them, adding "people didn't want us to play this position."

While McNabb is slumping, the Eagles have gotten solid production from running back Brian Westbrook, who had 17 carries for 96 yards and eight catches for 66 yards Monday. Westbrook leads the NFC with 293 scrimmage yards.

Bouncing back from a 0-2 start is notning new for your team, so who knows! Everything is possible. Intresting stat - only 5 teams earned a P.O. birth with a 0-3 start.

RUMOR HAS IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reid on way out in Philly, Gruden on way in?

Wednesday, Oct 3, 2007

After a tumultuous personal offseason involving legal troubles for two of his sons and a disappointing 1-3 start to the 2007 campaign, it should surprise no one that rumors are circulating that Philadelphia Eagles coach Andy Reid will step down after the season, if not sooner.

The fact that these events are unfolding in Philadelphia will only make the storm more intense. The unexpected qualification of the Phillies for the baseball playoffs could stave off the bulk of the scrutiny for as long as a month, but eventually the Phils will be done and the focus will shift back to the Eagles.

And the name to watch in this regard is Jon Gruden, head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Philly's pass-happy offense is performing poorly

By ROB MAADDI, AP Sports Writer
October 12, 2007

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Donovan McNabb isn't his old self. Reggie Brown is no T.O. Kevin Curtis isn't even Donte' Stallworth.

Added up, that explains why the Philadelphia Eagles' once-potent passing attack has been mediocre.

"Our pass game has to get better," offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said. "It was terrific for one game, and we'll work hard and we'll prepare. They have great effort and great preparation. They just have to get better."

The Eagles are averaging 235.8 yards passing per game, which is 11th in the NFL. But they'd be fifth-worst in the league if not for a spectacular effort in a 56-point output against the Detroit Lions in Week 3. McNabb threw for 381 yards and four touchdowns against the Lions, and Curtis had 221 yards receiving and three scores.

They haven't done much in the other three games. Neither has anyone else on offense except for halfback Brian Westbrook. Overall, the Eagles have scored 28 points -- one TD and seven field goals -- in their three losses.

"I think there were just entirely too many mistakes," McNabb said. "We made mistakes as a unit, as a unit that is experienced, that has had success in previous years. It's definitely frustrating and upsetting. We look forward to erasing the mistakes, changing and moving in a positive direction."

McNabb clearly hasn't been the player he was before tearing a knee ligament last November. His ability to scramble out of the pocket and create big plays is limited now, and he's made some poor throws. Sometimes, McNabb just hasn't had anywhere to throw because Curtis, Brown and the other wideouts aren't getting open consistently enough. Or, he hasn't had time to pass.

In a 16-3 loss to the New York Giants that preceded last week's bye, McNabb was sacked 12 times, tying an NFL record. It probably wouldn't have mattered if Terrell Owens or Stallworth were out there because McNabb kept going down, though a few of those sacks were coverage ones.

It hasn't helped that tight end L.J. Smith, McNabb's safety valve, missed the last two games and was hampered by injury the first two. Smith is expected to play against the New York Jets on Sunday.

"There's no one thing," Mornhinweg said. "Our passing game is based on precision and timing and accuracy and catching the football and making some yards after the catch. We just have to get better at that."

Brown, a third-year pro, has been a major disappointment. He has just eight receptions for 81 yards after catching 46 passes for 816 yards and eight TDs last year.

Curtis, signed after Stallworth left for New England, has eight catches for 102 yards, excluding his career-best game against Detroit.

Before Owens came along in 2004 and Stallworth last year, McNabb had success with some pedestrian receivers. From Charles Johnson and Torrance Small to James Thrash and Todd Pinkston, McNabb found a way to put up big numbers.

Brown, Curtis, Jason Avant, Hank Baskett and Greg Lewis are a more formidable receiving corps than any McNabb had pre-T.O. So, if McNabb can get on track, the passing game has a chance to thrive.

"I feel confident in the receivers that I have," McNabb said. "All of us have obviously talked and just made sure that we're going to take full advantage of the opportunities that are given to us. This offense is based on timing, and if the timing is thrown off a little bit, some routes you have to hold onto a little longer, and some you don't. We just have to get back to that mode with our timing and chemistry being where it needs to be."

Eagles could be without Runyan, Dawkins, Considine

October 26, 2007

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Eagles starting right tackle Jon Runyan missed his third straight practice Friday and is questionable to make his 185th consecutive start Sunday against the Vikings.

Runyan bruised his tailbone in a training room fall last week, but played in Philadelphia's 19-16 loss to Chicago. He sat out practice this week and will be re-evaluated once the team arrives in Minnesota.

"We have a long flight up there. We'll keep giving him treatment, and so on, to see how he does," coach Andy Reid said.

The Eagles (2-4) also could be without both of their starting safeties. All-Pro Brian Dawkins, who hasn't played since sustaining a neck stinger in Week 2, is doubtful, though he practiced the last two days.

"He's feeling better all the way around," Reid said. "The stinger part of it, which is the main concern, has gone away. He's getting better."

Safety Sean Considine hurt his ankle in practice Thursday but returned to the field Friday and is also questionable.
