MLB Trade Deadline: July 31

July 31 is the trading deadline in the MLB and many experts say this will be a quiet deadline because of the fact so many teams are still in playoff contention and even the teams out of the playoff races will be asking for a lot. There are some players heavily mentioned in the rumors.

We have already seen Ty Wiggington traded to the Astros and Kenny Lofton once again traded to the Indians.

Here are the players mentioned in future trades
Mark Teixera (Texas Rangers): Power hitting corner infielder is the big name of the market as the Rangers are well out of contention. The Yankes, D-Backs, Red Sox, Angels and the Braves are interested. Rangers will be asking for a lot I think and the Braves are actually the favorites of picking him up

Jermaine Dye (White Sox): With the White Sox well out of it Dye is on the market. The Red Sox, Angels and Mets are interested in Dye. He would have trouble finding a spot in the lineup for the Red Sox and the Angels don't won't to give up too much for him. As for the Mets, he isn't the #1 target

Eric Gagne (Texas Rangers): Former dominant closer is now with the Rangers after his injury problems. He is the big name reliever out there and the Yankees, Mets and the Red Sox are interested. All these teams can use him, but the price will be steep and the Rangers want top prospects.

Octavio Dotel (Kansas City Royals): Another hard throwing reliever who is a closer for the Royals. He also has injury problems but is an effective hard thrower. The Mets, Yankees, Tigers, Mariners, Braves are looking for him.

There are some other mentionable players like: Ken Griffey Jr., Brad Lidge (looking unlikely) Ryan Klesko, Soloman Torres, Chad Cordero, Jay Payton and others

What does your team need and what are the rumors surrounding you team?

For the NY Mets, the main target is a relief pitcher and another bat off the bench or even a right handed starting outfielder. 2B is an issue too but Gotay and Easley have done well.
Mets have been rumored to getting Dotel, Gagne and Cordero for the bullpen and Jay Payton for that outfield spot and Mark Loretta for the 2B spot. Mets have plenty of talent in the minor league system but honestly, in my opinion the Mets should only look for another bat off the bench and a hard throwing late inning relief pitcher

A starting pitcher (or two) would be essential for the Dodgers with the unbelievable injury crisis to the rotation. Schmidt is out for the year, Lowe pulled a groin muscle, Penny an abdominal muscle and Wolf has been out for more than a month now. Its nuts

Rumours are Dotel and Garland/Contreras are almost certain to be traded for.

If we want any of Dotel, Gagne, or Cordero, we're going to be giving up top young talent and I'm not a fan of that. Dotel has been sporadic, Gagne has been a bandaid the last few years, and Cordero is wild but unproven in the post-season.

I'd like to see the Mets add a 2B/3B back-up with a good bat and a decent glove. Also add a relief pitcher, but preferably an older guy with post-season experience. The last thing I want is another Heilman mess throwing away a series.

I don't know why we are desperate for a 2B, Gotay is hitting like .360, the only negative is his defense. Easley is a veteran and good with the bat and on the field, nothing special but a solid player. Also, Marlon Anderson can play 2B.

Hopefully they don't trade Milledge. They need to find another bat off the bench, mainly an outfield to switch with Green. Keep Gomez down in AAA when healthy.

Bullpen is a must, I do not want to see Schoeneweis is these key spots! the fans start booing him when the guy starts his swing because they know its a double

All I know is the Yanks are 100% getting rid of Farnsworth, some teams are actually interested in him.

He has had a poor atitude and yesterday he got crossed up with Posada (meaning, Posada was expecting a curveball but Farnsworth threw a fastball and the pitch hit Posada in the chest) and Farnsworth showed him up. He also had some negative quotes in the paper

The Tigers are after Farnsworth and i think its a good deal (Yanks are just trying to dump him) because he did well in Detroit back in the days and the Yankees are rumored to be after Gagne from what i've read.

Braves set to acquire Teixeira from Rangers
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7074846

The deal is done, pending review of the medical records of the players involved. The Rangers will receive catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Class A shortstop Elvis Andrus and two pitching prospects.

Huge pickup by the Braves it will make an already good hitting lineup even better, gave up a lot but it was worth it for a proven slugger.Salty is going to be good but he is still 2-3yrs away from making an impact ,Andrus is only 18 and we cant wait for him to develop plus we have Escobar and Lilibridge a tSS .We need to win now cuz Chipper and Smoltz are getting older and we cant afford to wait around for prospects.

Who cares! i like a team that is not afraid to do go for it... the Tigers have a ton of pitching prospects and a guy called Cameron Maybin who everyone in the majors wants right now, but they are afraid to deal him because of what he could be in the future. So they will only make a minor pick up like Farnsworth and hope that he can save the terrible bullpen until Zamaya comes back and thats a big IF which will probably cost them the division. Also the Yankees always make a big trade at the deadline and you hear every year how they are running out of prospects lol. When you have a team with veterans and good starting pitching you just have to go for it. I remember a few years back when the Tigers traded for Juan Gonzalez and everyone was saying oh how they gave up so much for him and this soon to be superstars in Frank Catalanotto and Gabe Kapler (the greatest minor league player) and now neither of them are even in the majors. Plus like Velez said the Braves have to win now since they still have Smoltz and Chipper on the team.

I see your point but you gotta understand that i support a team that historically speaking, always had the best farm system in the majors and this year's kids are just gold with Martin, Kemp, Ethier, Loney etc. so im a bit skeptical about giving up prospects for rental players.

Good deal for the Braves though, Teiexiera will compliment the Jones' very well. Look out for them.

Here are some more rumors:

• According to sources, the Mets' chances to acquire Chad Cordero are diminished by their refusal to trade any of their superb young outfielders, Lastings Milledge (the Mets' best hitter lately), Carlos Gomez (an Omar Minaya favorite) and Fernando Martinez (perhaps the best hitter of the three). But they aren't giving up in their effort to land the Nationals' closer.

• The Yankees are still reluctant to surrender one of their top pitching prospects for Eric Gagne, but they and the Mets are about the only two contending teams over which Gagne, who would prefer to close, doesn't have trade veto power (the 12 teams to which he can be traded consist mostly of also-rans such as the Pirates, Reds, Royals and Nats). Kyle Farnsworth (two runs allowed in one mop-up inning) once again showed on Sunday why the Yankees need Gagne.

• Jermaine Dye's three homers in five games should help the White Sox's efforts to deal him. The Red Sox, Dodgers, Padres and Angels could be in the mix, though Anaheim's main interest would be for a corner infielder.

• The Tigers are still looking for relief after four blown saves this week (not to mention an old-fashioned whipping at the hands of Anaheim, which outscored Detroit 34-13 in a three-game sweep). Although, they have to be heartened in the knowledge that Fernando Rodney's returning soon. They hope Joel Zumaya is, too.

• The Astros have told some teams that they will keep Chad Qualls now that they have traded Dan Wheeler.

• The Devil Rays may not be done overhauling their bullpen as there is growing interest, particularly among the Mariners and Mets, in closer Al Reyes. Management has said it is not likely another deal will be made, but that it is a possibility as the team continues to explore potential trades for the 37-year-old Reyes.

• Mets are close to acquiring Luis Castillo for two minor leaguers. Double A starter Kevin Mulvey had been rumored earlier today. Is Castillo even an upgrade at second base? Maybe, but it'd be hard to argue he's a difference-maker. The Mets have a 4.5 game lead over the Braves; Atlanta's Teixeira and Dotel upgrades may be worth right around that difference.

Dye to Red Sox back on?

Sources are saying that the rumored Jermaine Dye to the Red Sox deal is entering the serious stage of discussions and that the deal may very well get done today. The Red Sox in return would likely give up talented but struggling outfielder Wily Mo Pena and a minor league pitcher. The Red Sox have a very strong minor league system but it seems unlikely that they would give up one of their top prospects for a RF rental.

Yankees Give Up on Gagne

It doesn't look like Eric Gagne will be going to the Yankees. While there was interest, the Rangers want outfielder Melky Cabrera and GM Brian Cashman said, forget it.

http://www.mlb-rumors.blogspot.com/

Even the Red Sox and Yankees are hesitant to make a trade.

because everybody wants the Yankees top prospects like Hughes, Chamberlain and Tabata. I live 30 minutes away from their AA team and see them quite often and these guys are good. Yankees actually have a good farm system for a change and they are not going to be quick to get rid of the guys

As for the Mets, 2B is not really needed honestly, bullpen help and maybe even a guy for the rotation, nothing big, a 4th-5th starter especially if Sosa continues to struggle. Minaya only trades for Latino players anyway

Mets make a pointless trade

Mets get: Luis Castillo, a guy who has a good batting average but no power, heck our current second baseman in something like 200 less at-bats that Castillo has more RBI's.

Twins get: Dustin Martin, power hitting outfield in A-ball. AA catcher Drew Bureta, who is hitting something like .240...so he must be a good defensive player p

in terms of the players we traded away, it isn't anything really, but the trade wasn't necessary. I am happy with Gotay

Strong rumours going around that the Dodgers will trade Betemit for Proctor. I personally think we can get somebody way better than Proctor for Betemit, doesnt make sense.

- Peter Abraham confirms that the Yankees seem unlikely for Gagne. He says the Red Sox are offering David Murphy and Kason Gabbard, while the Cubs are still quietly involved. Not sure whether Gagne would have to consent to a trade to the Cubs, but he could be used as their closer without a major uprising.

- Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Yankees aren't liking their chances to get Eric Gagne. That might mean he's going to the Red Sox, Mets, or Brewers, or that he's staying put.

- The Mets don't seem likely given some previous reports and the Rangers' demand for Carlos Gomez.

- The Red Sox would probably give up David Murphy and the Brewers would surrender Tony Gwynn Jr. If the Rangers would settle for Gwynn, a deal could happen quickly because Gagne cannot veto a trade there. However, he can block a move to Boston and that would present another obstacle.

- Speaking of the Red Sox, Rosenthal sees their chances for Jermaine Dye faded. After all, that deal would have a no-trade obstacle too.

Red Sox upgrade bullpen with Gagne deal

Sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney that the Red Sox and Rangers agreed in principle on a deal for Texas' closer. In exchange, Boston will send pitcher Kason Gabbard and minor leaguer outfielders Engel Beltre and David Murphy to the Rangers.

Gagne waived his no-trade clause to join the American League East leaders and agreed to be Boston's set-up man after the Red Sox restructured the reliever's contract. Boston will pick up $2.1 million in Gagne's performance bonuses, while the Rangers will pay $400,000.

Gagne joins a bullpen that includes All-Star closer Jonathan Papelbon and ranks as having the best ERA in the majors (2.74) and fewest blown saves (four).

from NY sports talk...both Mets and Yanks fans are upset p

Yankees are angry that Gagne goes to the Red Sox and the Yanks do very little. Procter was pretty sad he was traded, depressed really.

Mets fans are mad because the trade was pointless and Minaya sits on his ass with a weak bullpen
