The Marvelous Masks

A goaltender's helmet is often his signature piece of equipment. Check out some of this colorful headwear in this photo gallery

Some of my old favorites were Joseph's Cujo and Belfour's eagle masks. My current favorites are DiPietro and Turco and the most weird one is Niittymaki of the Flyers who has an Al Capone look a like on his mask, also Ray Emery had Mike Tyson on his mask but was forced to change it.

All kinds of goalie mask photos:

Two of the all time greats Jacques Plante and Terry Sawchuck. How did they ever survive with those old time retro masks? Here is an old picture of Sawchuck: and it clearly shows how much of a beating his face used to take. So back in those days you had to be a real man to play this position, not only did they not have good protection in the face but they did not even have the enormous goalie equipment of today and yet a guy like Sawchuk still managed to have 103 shutouts a record that is still standing today. Just AMAZING!

back then the shots were not as hard and the stick's did not have as much curve on them (meaning it was harder to shoot high), but it was still dangerous of course
