Countdown to 10,000... Phillies the biggest losers in all of sports!

The Philadelphia Phillies, who played their first game in 1883, are approaching a milestone that speaks of futility and longevity: With 9,999 losses, they are on the verge of becoming the first pro sports franchise to record 10,000 losses. Behind them are the Atlanta Braves (9,675) and Chicago Cubs (9,421). Most of the Phillies' defeats came early, with them losing at least 90 games in a season 20 times from 1921-45. In fact, no team has ever stunk so often as the Phillies, who, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, have lost more games than any professional franchise in any sport.

I think its gonna happen tonight.

I see they have been avoiding it for a few games now, I'm sure if the Mets were older they would have broken 10,000 easily

I would imagine that if the records of all the teams that have played in Washington DC over the years were combined, they'd be pretty close to this number. "First in war, first in peace and last in the National (and American) League."

You know the scene it's very hum-drum
And my favorite song's entitled "Boredom"...

yeah, but I don't see the big deal about it? eventually every team will lose that much

Also, they are one of the oldest teams in baseball, since 1880, so I'm guessing even with their 10,000 losses, they probably have that many wins

Nope their total winning % is .469 and like John Miller said in last nights game, they would have to go on a 1,200 game winning streak just to get to .500.

this was even reported on Vecernji List (Croatian paper). I like how they mentioned the website "Phillysucks.com" in the article

The biggest losers in pro sports

Which teams come to mind when you think of the worst of the worst?

Here are my choices:

MLB = Tampa Bay Devil Rays (why do they even exist?) Cubs are a close 2nd cause they have not won a WS in almost 100 years and during all that time you would think they should have won at least once by accident... hell the expansion Marlins have won 2 tittles in less then a decade.

NBA = LA Clippers (in the NBA you really have to suck to only make the playoffs 4 times in 37 years)

NHL = Columbus Blue Jackets (only team left to never make the playoffs and yes i know they were one of the last expansion teams but look at the Thrashers even they finally made it to the playoffs) historically the Blackhawks are right behind them if you want to look at past history and not having won the Cup in almost 50 years plus they have not won a playoff series since 96.

NFL = Cardinals and Lions (Cardinals have only one winning season since 84 plus 8 straight losing seasons and until recently they played in a college stadium, the Lions have never made it to the Super Bowl while being in the NFL since the beginning and have only 1 playoff win in 40 years... oh and on top of all that they now have 6 straight losing season all with 10 or more losses)

MLB - Tampa Bay Devil Rays and Kansas City Royals
NBA - Don't really follow the league, just based on location Portland
NHL - Well ideally, half of these teams would be cut, mainly Columbus, Phoenix
NFL - Cardinals
